I wrote Canned and Crushed for some of my favorite students who claimed they couldn't find any books they liked to read. While the book was being edited their current classroom teacher read them the chapters, printed on plain paper, but she didn't tell them who wrote the book. One day she told them that the author was coming to visit to read the final chapter and answer questions. When I walked in the room, they invited me to stay and meet the special author. Were they ever surprised to find out I was the special author! They presented me with ideas for the cover and title. And they continue to tell me they love the book when I visit and ask me questions about what Sandro, the main character, is doing today and if his sister is still okay, as if the characters in the book are real people. I love that. I want to write books that show kids how important they are and that just one kid can make the world a better place. My next book deals with the friendship of two boys in 1919 in Chicago. It's historical fiction and will be released next spring. A group of fifth graders read and reacted to the book while I was editing it. They gave it a thumbs up, and I hope you will too!

Great read! Sandro holds a lot of responsibility on ...

Great read! Sandro holds a lot of responsibility on his shoulders when his sister gets sick and has to go for surgery in Mexico and Dad is working a few jobs. Such is the story for many of the kids in our school district. Bibi does a great job nailing the details to make this such an authentic read. Sandro is humorous and talks to the reader as he narrates.

Great book! The character gets in so much trouble ...

Great book! The character gets in so much trouble that is real and heart-warming because his intentions are so good. But he's not perfect--just like most kids. The lessons in this book are wonderful. And it's funny, too, with a great fast pace. I was really rooting for this Hispanic boy and his family. This is the type of book that might encourage good conversations with parents and classmates. I loved how the author brought in good math problems and interesting words for kids to learn in an organic way within the story. I highly recommend this book for middle-grade readers and adults who also love middle-grade adventures.

A book that feels like a walk through a middle-grade school hallway, Bibi Belford has managed to capture the language of middle-schoolers while presenting a character that is often difficult to like, even as you are exposed to more of his life away from school.

Sandro Zapote is a kid in a difficult situation: his father is in the US without papers, and his little sister has a heart condition that requires treatment that is far more expensive than his family can afford. The family’s living situation gets worse when his mother and sister head to Mexico so Girasol can get treatment, leaving Sandro and his father back in the states. Worry about his sister, a solid and often single-minded determination to help his family, and Sandro’s own sense of ‘justice’ in dealing with those who wrong him give this book an all too plausible feel, while introducing issues that are difficult and controversial for adults, let alone children.

Belford uses Sandro’s desires to do good with his often and frequent moments of bad behavior, tying it back to his desires to ‘do for’ his family when not everything works out quite as he would plan. Simple childish reactions of jealousy, mischief and small vandalisms will be easy for children to understand, and they will most probably ‘side with’ Sandro in some of his actions gone horridly wrong. Underneath the mischief and mistakes is a child desperate to help his family but wholly without the real skills or options to do so.

With a few twists and unexpected help from surprise places, wonderfully rich characters and prose that feels honest and real while still presenting issues that are far more adult than one would expect in a story for children, Belford presents readers with an opportunity for discussion, learning and enjoyment.

About the Author
Herman Wouk is the author of such classics as The Caine Mutiny" (1951), Marjorie Morningstar "(1955), Youngblood Hawke" (1961), Don t Stop the Carnival" (1965), The Winds of War" (1971), War and Remembrance" (1978), and Inside, Outside" (1985). His later works include The Hope" (1993), The Glory" (1994), and A Hole in Texas" (2004). Among Mr. Wouk s laurels are the 1952 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for The Caine Mutiny"; the cover of Time" magazine for Marjorie Morningstar", the bestselling novel of that year; and the cultural phenomenon of The Winds of War "and War and Remembrance", which he wrote over a thirteen-year period and which went on to become two of the most popular novels and TV miniseries events of the 1970s and 1980s. In 1998, he received the Guardian of Zion Award for support of Israel. In 2008, Mr. Wouk was honored with the first Library of Congress Fiction Award, to be known as the Herman Wouk Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Writing of Fiction. He lives in Palm Springs, California.

The Greatest Historical Novel Ever!

Herman Wouk is a great writer. With War and Remembrance and its predecessor, The Winds of War, He sealed his reputation as a great writer of historical fiction. Unlike such writers as Leon Uris, who tends to create heroic larger than life heroes and James Michener, who skimps on characterization altogether, Wouk creates brilliantly real figures who seem to live, breath and sometimes die. Whereas the Winds of War covers the period from just prior to the German invasion of Poland in Sept. 1939 through Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, War and Remembrance covers the period from after Pearl through the surrender of Japan in August 1945. As with the previous book, Wouk blends his fictional characters with real figures such as Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin and Hitler.
By exploring the experiences of the fictional Henry family and their extended acquaintances, Wouk manages to cover virtually every aspect of this sprawling epic struggle between good and evil. There is Victor "Pug" Henry, stoic Navy captain, his dutiful bound son Warren, a Navy flyer bound for action in the Pacific, his formerly wayward son Byron, now a submarine officer who marries the Jewish woman Natalie Jastrow in Europe. Natalie herself is trapped in Italy with her Uncle, the intellectual scholar Aaron Jastrow and her baby Louis. The Nazi vice that slowly closes on the American born Natalie is excruciating yet stunningly realistic. There is Leslie Slote, the callous foreign service officer who has an epiphany when he discovers the plans for the Final Solution and there are many many others. Wouk blends the personal stories of these characters with an expositional account of the war. He uses the device of a fictional memoir of an imprisoned German officer to prsent the war from the German perspective. It is bone-chilling reading. Finally, Wouk's stunning descriptions of Auschwitz are the most realistic and engrossing description of the Holocaust I have ever read. This book is moving, gripping and engrossing. It is also highly educational. The reader of War and Remembrance will learn a great deal about the Second World War and the War will be brought to life by this book better than any history. This novel should not be missed nor should The Winds of War.

A TOUR DE FORCE

When I read "The Winds of War", it was only after I had read the reviews of the book on Amazon.com that I realised that life would never be complete until I had read the sequel.
Trolling Nairobi's thrift shops at long last gave me access to one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is an epic novel, a great romance (and heaven knows how I hate those, but this one was a gem), and perhaps the best history lesson on the Second World War I have come across.

One; it brings to life the Holocaust in a way that history books can never hope to compare. Auschwitz is no longer a footnote to horror - it is now a flesh and blood camp with horrifyingly banal commandants. The SS are not nameless, faceless sadists - they are normal people with an abnormal hatred.
Secondly, the philosophical-historical insights into European and German history, as seen through the mind of Aaron Jastrow, are superb.
I need not dwell on the sweeping historical views of the war of "Armin von Roon", that bring the bigger picture of the war into play.
Natalie Jastrow, in my opinion the most developed character in the book, is prepared to prostitute herself in order to save her life in Auschwitz that she may see her son again. That, to me, makes her all the more remarkable a person than if she had remained unbelievably pious. Natalie is a real human being. The only injustice Wouk does to her is not to develop her character after Auschwitz.
Finally, the most touching part of the book was the night that Udam, the theater man in Theresienstadt, decides to sing the haunting songs of the Jews under the threat of death. Of all the moments in the book, this one was the one that brought me closest to tears.
The longest book I have ever read (at 1389 pages in my version), and certainly a book I will read again. This is a rare gem.

Sets the standard for historical fiction

WOW. Exceptional historical research, developed characters and subplots, great storytelling. A book for the ages. With Winds of War (read it first), this was a 2000+ page trek. Worth it and very satisfying. While being entertained, the reader receives an educational narrative of the progression of events, the atmosphere, and the personalities of WWII. Among the most enjoyable aspects for me was reading the face-to-face encounters with important personages of the war (at least Wouk's interpretation of them). It was the next best thing to having sat in a room with these people. By cleverly using a fictional family and its involvement in the war, Wouk takes the reader all over the world, providing a wonderful comprehensive overview of WWII. Finishing it meant saying goodbye to old and beloved friends. I repeat . . . WOW.

Couldn't put the book down!

I love all of Drew Lindsay's Ben Hood novels, but truth be known, I really think I fell in love the main character Ben Hood, geez what a guy!! The first of Drew Lindsay's books I read was "Black Mountain Affair" and after finishing it I wanted to read more by the author if I could. I did find more but discovered I had read the second book of the Ben Hood novels, so you might want to read them in order as written but not necessary as each has a definite beginning and ending so you are not hanging waiting for a sequel. The first is if interested is “Coral Sea Affair”.
Take an adventure in Australia!! It took me a bit to wrap my head around the dialect, and once I did it made the reading ever so much more exciting. In this one you’ll find intrigue, mystery, fear, revenge, greed, compassion, courage and more that is will keep you on your toes until the end. You will love this title!!

I was unsure if I would like this book but I figured hey, it's free I would give it a shot...and I am so glad I did! This was a for sure thriller. The characters were well developed and it was suspensful. It left me wanting more of this author and have to went to the beginning of the series. But even if you go out of sequence it still works! I highly recommend this book, this author, and this series!

This is a really great book full of suspense, humour, drama and above all trust and friendships forged through adversity. If there were more than this book and the Coral Sea Affair in the series I would be first to put my hand up to read the lot. I think Ben Hood and his entourage are great. He really gets into and out of some tight spots in his quest for justice.

An inside look at Rodin, his life and dedication to his art, and Rilke, his almost slavish devotion and idolizing of Rodin, and his own genius as a poet and failure as a father and husband. High brow gossip about artists we sometimes see for only their art and not the lives they lived that shaped their art. Definitely recommend it.

A very engaging book!

An amazing book! It is incredibly interesting, adding depth and dimension to two well known artists in a way that creates a deeper awareness of not only their relationship, but the relationship of art in ones life. Because of this, it is a very engaging read no matter your interest in Rodin and in Rilke. Great insights are to be made of their lives through other relationships, particularly with their female muses. A very engaging book!

An endlessly inspiring book on a topic I knew nothing about. Who knew these two knew each other, let alone had such a profound effect on one another?! This was so engaging I read through it almost too quickly - I didn't want it to end. (And I personally loved the attention paid to the women in this particular Parisian social scene, true talents and personalities worthy of acknowledgement in their own right). I read this book to learn about the history, but gleaned so much more. Corbett effortlessly creates an immersive dual-portrait, and her account compells me to tackle projects of my own and motivated me to take the artists' lessons to heart. There is no time to create like the present.
