Q: You started your career as a journalist and your first book is a travelogue about going around the world. Is YA literature a departure for you?

Gayle Forman: Actually, it’s more of a homecoming. My first writing job was at Seventeen, where I spent five years on staff and as a contributor reporting the magazine’s social-issues stories. I loved writing for teens then because—contrary to popular opinion—they really care about serious issues (from child soldiers in Africa to kids embroiled in the drug war here) and the engage in their reading with such passion. So, now that I’m writing young-adult literature, it feels like I’ve come full circle.

Q: This book explores some serious themes. Why is this a book for kids and not adults?

GF: It’s a book for kids precisely because it explores serious themes. Teenagers are grappling with choices about life and love as much as adults, so why shouldn’t their reading reflect that? I don’t set out to write YA. It just seems like I’m drawn to stories about young people. That said, I think If I Stay is for adults, too. I love the idea of teens reading this book and then handing it off to their parents.

Q: Many key characters are serious musicians, and songs are referenced throughout the book. Are you a musician?

GF: No. Except for piano lessons when I was a kid and a brief spate of guitar playing in my teens, I’ve never played an instrument. I am, however, a huge music fan. And my husband is a musician; he was playing in a punk band when we met, so I’ve spent a lot of my life ensconced in that scene. I seem drawn to writing about musicians, though I’ve never been all that interested in the cello until Mia popped into my head.

Q: What inspired you to write this book?

GF: Music. Oregon. People I have loved. And unfortunately, the book is inspired by a real-life tragedy that happened several years ago.

Q: This is a book about death, but it’s not depressing. Why is that?

GF: Maybe because it’s really about the power of love—of family, friends, music—and therefore it ultimately affirms life.

However, she must first choose between fighting to survive and giving in to the resulting sadness and despair over all she has lost. “Love, it never dies. It never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it. Love can make you immortal.”

Ok well let me start off with how I felt before I read this book. I had heard so much about this book and it was recommended to me and I was really eager to start. The only problem was I put it up there at the top of my reading list but once I started, it wasn’t what I was expecting. I didn’t like the book as a whole and I don’t know what it was (probably the writing style) but it had some good parts to it. I liked how I could connect to some things the character said and how the memories would play throughout the book. I liked that Adam and Mia had a complicated relationship. This made the book seem real because in other books you see how all the couples have such a perfect relationship with just one problem and that is unreal while Mia and Adam started off with an uncomfortable start to their relationship. I found this endearing, as well as how they would feel towards one another, their doubts, their differences, and how their relationship developed through time. Even through all that they still fell in love with each other. That’s why I found it really sweet that Adam tried everything he could to get in to see Mia at the hospital. It was quite sad that she saw the accident and her family dead right in front of her eyes. Overall, it was an okay book but I think that in this case (which for me is almost never) the movie will be better that the book.

Review: If I Stay

There is so much I could say about this book, but at the same time I have no idea where to start. I will say that I read the book after I had seen the movie, which is something I usually don't do. Not that it's a bad thing, but I knew after seeing the movie that I had to read the book. With that being said it's also a book that's been on my TBR shelf for a few years, actually since about 2009. After seeing the movie and finally reading the book, I wanted to kick myself for not reading it sooner. Don't you just hate when that happens? I know it drives me nuts!

Anyway, let's discuss the actual book shall we. If I Stay had me mesmerized from the first few lines. I knew I was going to love this book, but honestly I wasn't sure how much was in the movie and how much had been changed. I enjoyed the movie, but honestly I loved the book so much more. The characters and how they dealt with everything is better described throughout the book and it made them more real to me then they were in the movie.

Packs an emotional punch, very well written- not your typical YA fare...

The premise of the story intrigued me, but that wasn't a huge part of the book. Most of the book is about Mia's back story, her relationship with her parents, her best friend and her boyfriend, her love for the cello, etc. I was surprised at how strongly the story impacted me- it really made me examine my own life on a deep level and I found myself crying on several occasions. I'm quite surprised this is considered a YA book- even though the main character is a teenager, I found the themes resonated with me at age 49. The writing is also superb- I haven't read a book this good in a long time.

The only criticism I have- and it's a mild one- is that the "present-day" events, and what Mia goes through as she makes her decision, are not developed to the extent I thought they would have been. After all, it's the original premise of the book- you expect the character to go through a lot of struggles to decide whether to return to life or not. And in the end, you don't see her actually make the decision- it just kind of suddenly happens, and then the book is over. Perhaps not surprising since it leads you to immediately want to read "Where She Went" to find out what happens next. And honestly, the book was so good that I didn't even realize the life-or-death decision hadn't been explored fully until the book was over!

The GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible is a terrific book. However, I didn't read it to prepare for the GMAT. I read it to better understand company assessment/evaluation exams. Many companies hire outside firms specializing in assessments (tests), to help evaluate management personnel. Your book helped me become more familiar with these types of corporate exams. Extremely comprehensive but could use more practice questions

This book systematically organizes every GMAT CR question type into "families," with each family possessing its own set of characteristics. Such an organization facilitates a better understanding of each question type because you know what to look for after you finish reading each question. I've gone through the book once already but am going through it one more time to make sure I really absorb the material.

Also, the book actually breaks down the concept of an argument and helps you understand the building blocks of an argument in order to be able to attack any question by following the same rules. There's no discussion of cheap tricks to try to find correct answers. This book is an absolute must if you hope to master critical reasoning on the GMAT. It's especially helpful for people like me who are weak in this part of the verbal section because you are given a step-by-step process for approaching every question. Despite the differences in question types, almost every question can be attacked in a similar manner. So it's good to see a book that focuses on the fundamentals of argumentation.

The only reason I knocked off one star is because this book could use some more practice questions. There are 50 practice questions, but I don't feel like that's enough. This book should be used in conjunction with the Official Guide.

Ultimate Answer to Your Critical Reasoning Needs

Powerscore released a new 2015 edition of the book. It has had some updates - several chapters have been completely updated with new overview, examples and new problem sets. Navigation has also been improved. It has grown too by about 70 pages (in part due to having more white space and in part due to content). Not a light book at 370 pages but definitely very very comprehensive overview of pretty much everything. Don't expect to see too much fluff, the book gets right to it. Though after MGMAT has improved their CR book (currently in its 6th edition), I would have given this book 3-4 stars, the latest revision seems to provide a good alternative to the Veritas Prep/MGMAT books.

==== 2009 Review ====
Though pretty similar to Manhattan GMAT book, it offers more practice questions in the book and has a slightly better overview of the Critical Reasoning questions.

~~~ Strengths: ~~~
1. In-depth overview of the Critical Reasoning strategies and approaches to questions
2. Clearly divides the CR question types and provides specific strategy for each type as well as the pitfalls and common errors. You will also get to know how the CR questions are made.
3. Good quality GMAT-like practice questions
4. Created by the authors of the best LSAT books (LSAT logic section is much harder than CR on the GMAT; there is actually a decent amoount of overlap in this book with the LSAT book). Speaking of which, for extra hardcore (and absolutely not necessary but still), you can get the PowerScore LR book (comes with quite a few LSAT questions)

~~~ Weaknesses: ~~~
1. Could use more practice questions (more than mgmat though); you will need to find another source of CR questions such as GMAT Official guide 12 or the verbal supplement to the Official Guide (though the verbal OG has questions on the easier side)
2. Some explanations are too convoluted
3. No tests or online excercises/additional content

~~~~ My Suggestions ~~~~
- Read explanations to every question. Even if you got a question right, it does not mean, you solved it correctly (that is you used the correct approach or found all the shortcusts). You will be surpised sometimes and will pick up helpful tips even from explanations of questions you answered correctly
- Follow the actual strategies (DUH). This is probably the most common mistake people make - they start inventing their own approaches. Don't do it until you have a high verbal score. If you don't, just follow!
- If you don't have any Manhattan GMAT books, you want to get at least one, as each comes with access to 6 online CAT tests (these tests are worth the purchase). There is not a whole lot of value to get both Powerscore CR and MGMAT CR; the content is by large the same.

Refuge managers ditched wetlands, channelized rivers, applied Agent Orange and rotenone to waterways, killed beaver, and cut down willows. Where Land and Water Meet examines the reasoning behind and effects of these interventions, gleaning lessons from their successes and failures.

Although remote and specific, the Malheur Basin has myriad ecological and political connections to much larger places. This detailed look at one tangled history of riparian restoration shows how―through appreciation of the complexity of environmental and social influences on land use, and through effective handling of conflict―people can learn to practice a style of pragmatic adaptive resource management that avoids rigid adherence to single agendas and fosters improved relationships with the land.

Excellent book about ecology and land use conflicts in the arid West.

None of the recent news reports I have read or heard about the recent occupation of the wildlife refuge in the Malheur Basin (including in the New York Times and on NPR) did justice to the deep history of land use and the environment there. The real story is much more complex and nuanced than just ranchers vs. the government. Nancy Langston's book unfolds the rich history of Native Americans, ranchers, homesteaders, wildlife managers, and environmental groups who arrived in the basin in that order, and how they viewed and tried to control the distribution of water in this sagebrush desert for different ends. Therein lies the conflict. Each of these groups accomplished some good, but each also distorted ecological processes to their own detriment and that of the other groups. The last chapter is a superb exposition of adaptive management and how it relates to the distinctly American philosophy of Pragmatism developed by John Dewey and William James. I am not usually a fan of philosophy, but I found this chapter very intriguing; it motivated me to read more of James's writing and other books that take a similar approach.

pragmatic, not polemical

ordered this while the Malheur Standoff/occupation was going on. Excellent work on a vital and beloved area, with good documentation.It as not all about birds and cattle. The role of Fish and Woldlife managers, for better or worse, is made very clear. The dashed hopes of early homesteader and squatters, who were great grandparents of present day citizens, is also clear...explains a lot from a sociological point of view. For example the squatter kids who would swim out to a nest to collect eggs and catch and kill swans for dinner.Not sport, subsistance. One thing left to explain is how a "river" that used to be called "Donner und Blitzen" became just "Blitzen"

David Armstrong’s individual stories have won the Mississippi Review Prize, the New South Writing Contest, Jabberwock Review’s Prize for Fiction, Ardor Literary Magazine’s Fiction Contest, and Bear Deluxe Magazine’s Doug Fir Fiction Award, among others. His latest stories appear in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Mississippi Review, Baltimore Review, Carve Magazine, and online at Trop Magazine. David has a PhD in fiction from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He is fiction editor of Witness Magazine and recipient of the Black Mountain Institute Fellowship.
