Amazon.com Review
Volume two of the Cerebus the Aardvark series, High Society, is the beginning of the main Cerebus story line and one of the finest graphic novels ever published. If you have to start from the very beginning, you'll need the first volume, Cerebus, but if you don't mind a modicum of confusion, this is a much more satisfying place to begin. The artwork is much improved and the level of humor reaches its high point in the series to date. (Unkind critics point to High Society as the older, funnier book of the Cerebus series.)

Parliamentary politics were never so much fun as they are in the Prime Minister election of 1414. Lord Julius and the mysterious Astoria battle for control of the city-state Iest with Cerebus as their unwitting pawn. Goats, bunny sketches, the Regency Elf, and Moon Roach join the pandemonium, helping to set the stage for things to come. High Society is a home run; an instant classic both as a stand-alone volume and in the context of the rest of the series. Beware though, the ending dovetails directly into Church and State; You may want to grab that volume as well, because once you start the series, the story of Cerebus gets increasingly harder to put down.

Cerebus goes high art.
By Sean Curley
"Cerebus" is these days a controversial piece of work due to some of the rather unorthodox views propounded by its creator, Dave Sim, who, in the mid-90s, formulated some theories about women that fell afoul of, well, civilized views. This has retroactively cast a shadow over the earlier volumes of the series, such as "High Society", the second volume in the collection, and the first of the volumes that is genreally considered to have arrived at the higher artistic standards the series is famous for (the first volume consists of a series of short arcs that parody "Conan the Barbarian"; while starting at volume 2 will result in some confusion about the characters introduced earlier, some may prefer to start here). "High Society", though, remains well worth your time, coming years before Sim went off the rails.

Cerebus the Aardvark, a barbarian from the north now in the service of the Groucho Marx-esque Lord Julius of Palnu, is sent as emissary to the city-state of Iest. Cerebus is the definition of "uncultured", an do si not particularly suited to diplomacy, though he finds plenty of time for the activity that comes most naturally to him in any situation: self-aggrandizement. Allied with Astoria, the politically involved former acquaintance of Julius, he eventually becomes drawn into a race for Prime Minister of Iest, which is near-insolvent due to various trade and lending practices. Cerebus just wants to be the last man out before the collapse (said man will be very rich), while Astoria an dher faction have more political concerns (to which Cerebus is supremely indifferent). Once in office, Cerebus, having to keep the country out of bankruptcy, launches a war of conquest in pursuit of riches, but, with the strangely wily Julius in the mix, things do not turn out as he had hoped.

Most of "High Society" is a genial political satire, which has in its sights both the cynics (Cerebus chief among them, without scruple in exploiting others to gain power for himself) as and the idealists, who appear mainly as fools for Cerebus to manipulate. Sim's writing is marvelously clever. At the same time, he is capable of striking a serious note: the ending is quietly revelatory, as Sim seamlessly goes from satire to laying bare the genuine stakes in politics for people.

At the book's end, we have been Cerebus rise and fall, and, much the same as he was when he arrived, he departs for parts unknown (which, as we will find out in "Church and State", will involve first a return to where he already was).

"High Society" is my favorite "Cerebus" graphic novel
By Lawrance Bernabo
I started reading "Cerebus" when Dave Sim's independent black & white comic book was on the cusp of the "High Society" story line. "Cerebus, Book 2: High Society" (issues #226-50) constitutes the first "novel" in the history of the book and the point at which Sim had clearly moved beyond the idea of Cerebus the Barbarian stage, where it was basically a strange animal walking around in a world that was drawn in the style of Barry Windsor-Smith. I first became aware of Sim for the work he did with funny animals, beavers in particular, for "Quack." Actually, what got me reading "Cerebus" was not just that the comic book was getting a reputation for being one of the best of the alternative comic books put out by the independent press, but more importantly that there was a character in it who looked and talked like Groucho Marx.

That would be Lord Julius, one of several key characters in "High Society" who is introduced during the first two years of the title, along with the Roach, the would-be superhero that Sim would transform into a parody of whichever Marvel character was the current flavor of the month. Then there is Jaka, the dancer Cerebus first met in a tavern in Beduin. These three characters represent three major impulses in Sim's work. Lord Julius represents the inclusion of real characters into the world of Cerebus, which would eventually include the likes of Mick Jagger and Oscar Wilde. What began as a sort of simple joke (Groucho popping up is always going to be funny), became serious when the characters started symbolizing the reality of their real world counterparts. The Roach symbolizes Sim's commentary on the comic book business, which for me is the weakest of the three impulses. The whole Petuniacon takeover on a comic book convention is funny at face value, but it detracts a bit from the political satire that is at the heart of "High Society." Then there is Jaka.

It is hardly surprising that the original characters created by Sims would become the most important. In "High Society" this means not only Jaka but also Astoria and the Regency Elf. The Roach can move on to become first the Moon Roach and then Sergeant Preston of the Royal Mounted Iestan Police, and you can throw in the brothers Dirty Fleagle and Dirty Drew McGrew, but they are mere comic relief while the trio of feminine figures are at the heart of the story. Suddenly we have moved well beyond a funny animal to larger issues such as politics and gender (with religion and creativity to come in future novels).

Cerebus shows up in Iest at the Regency Hotel carrying with him the last few pieces of loot he has acquired on his travels. Expecting to be denied admittance, Cerebus is surprised when he is given free lodgings and food. Suddenly people are paying him bribes to just to remember the name of a company that makes gold-plated streetlamps when he talks to Lord Julius. From Cerebus the Aardvark to Cerebus the Barbarian we now have Cerebus the Lobbyist. Actually, it seems Cerebus is now a ranking diplomatic representative of a southern city-state and if you think the aardvark is in over his head, wait until Astoria shows up and starts dispensing political advice. More importantly, wait until Cerebus runs against a goat for the office of Prime Minister, because that is when "High Society" shifts into high gear, even as Iestan society falls apart.

That is also the point where "Cerebus" gets told sideways, starting in issue #44 "The Deciding Vote." I highlight that particular issue because it includes my all-time favorite page by Dave Sim, which would be page 383. In several of the preceding pages Sim shows Cerebus and another character traveling across a snowy landscape. What he was doing was drawing the landscape, dividing the drawing into vertical panels, with Cerebus and his companion shown in each panel making their way along. But on my favorite page on the dozen pages the first eight include the exact same drawing, with the last two being identical. What changes is the sound of Cerebus walking away on snowshoes ("WUFFA wuffa") and walking back ("wuffa WUFFA"). The page represents one of Sim's best jokes ever and whenever I have had occasion to lecture on comic book art I have always shown these pages along with those in one of Frank Miller's "Daredevil" comics when he retells the character's origin and has a line representing the Fixer's heartbeat indicating a heart attack going across the panels of DD chasing the man down.

"High Society" is my favorite Cerebus novel, although it is neither as ambitious as "Church and State" nor as polished as "Mothers and Daughters." But the impression it made when it was clear that Sim was now working the deep end of the poem has stayed with me and I do have an inherent love of political satire. Besides, Cerebus' reconciliation with Jaka is more touching than their poignant parting, the Regency Elf shakes up things nicely at inopportune times, and I love liberty as much as the next person raised in a free democratic society. Still, more scenes with Lord Julius would have been nice, especially if Astoria is involved. After this novel Gerhard starts doing backgrounds for Sim and the look of "Cerebus" changes dramatically (Gerhard did the cover, so if you compare that to the first splash page inside you can see how much of a difference this will make for the rest of the 300 issues of "Cerebus").

The start of something very special.
By K.A.
The second Cerebus graphic Novel takes the aardvark from an amusing little sword swinging barbarian to an interesting, well fleshed out character. We begin to see Cerebus become more than just a parody of Conan and we start to learn that Dave Sim can tell a good story. The artwork in this series is also some of the best I have seen to date. His cross hatching work is amazing and the lack of color is hardly noticed. I am very happy to be reading these books again and plan to purchase all of them! I would recommend these to friends and to anybody that is looking for a fun adventure to sink their teeth into!

"His closest companion was an iron rod."
By K. L Sadler
Well, that will teach me not to read the entire review of a book before sending for it! Not that I'm complaining about the book...I thought it was for adults. It's not really, though I can see using it for reading and science literacy for deaf adults.
This is a great book. The explanations concerning what happened to Mr. Gage, and the science behind his medical recovery and subsequent personality problems is fairly well covered. There is a great glossary in the back with more information concerning terminology used in 'brain science' such as abscess and neurotransmitters that can be used as a jumping point for students to do their own research into areas that interest them, whether on the Internet or in libraries.
I kind of skimmed through the text. Most of it was stuff I've had over exposure to. The text is well written, just more simple than I am used to reading. Fleischman writes very tongue-in-cheek (come to think of it, Gage couldn't do that for a while on one side!). I appreciate Fleischman's humor, and I am sure most teachers and students will find it refreshing from boring textbooks written by professors or publishing houses. The science is correct in this book, which I am finding is often NOT the case in textbooks...so maybe teachers should stop using textbooks and use books such as this, journals and the Internet!
My favorite part of this book, of course, are the pictures, the MRI scans, the reconstitution of his brain within his skull using modern techniques. Very fun to see all this together. Gage is learned about in every neuroscience class I had from an undergrad to graduate level. We talk about the fact that he survived this stunning blow, about his personality changes in neuropsychiatric classes, about possible relations between other disorders such as autism and what happened in lobotomies (ugh!...). Everyone in Neuroscience knows about Gage. He is fascinating to the point of remembering his name when we can't remember names of past acquaintances.
Fun book, good science, great pictures, a good introduction for kids to neuroscience.

It puts the "me" in "gruesome"
By E. R. Bird
As a children's librarian, I do a lot of booktalks in area schools. In a typical booktalk I will stand up with a pile of books at my side and try by any means necessary to get kids interested in reading. Such an effort can cause a librarian a fair amount of strain and sometimes we'll stoop mighty low to get children hooked. Enter "Phineas Gage". By and large, non-fiction titles are the hardest ones to sell to kids. You tell a ten-year-old that you have a story about a boy who finds a mysterious dragon's egg and you'll probably have a convert before you've uttered so much as ten sentences. But if you hold in your hot little hand an item that contains actual FACTS.... usually you're up a crik. Not in the case of Phineas. This book is so chock full of blood, splattered brains, busted skulls, and other goopy beginnings that your intended audience, whatever the age, will be hanging on your every word. For the parent that wants their child to someday become a high priced neurologist, I highly suggest that you give them a little taste of "Phineas Gage" for a starter.

Now imagine that you are Mr. Gage himself. The year is 1848 and you're just an average railroad construction foreman. Your job consists of blasting rock out of the way of the construction, allowing further tracks to be laid. You're good at your job, and you've a custom-made tamping iron (thirteen-pound rod with a pointed end) to help you out. Then, on September 13, 1848, you mess up. It could happen to anyone. One moment you're putting the highly combustible blasting powder down a hole. The next minute you've turned your head in distraction and you've dropped your tamping iron down that selfsame hole. The iron hits a piece of granite, produces a spark, and suddenly the iron has ripped through your left cheek, gone behind your left eyeball, and come up through the top of your head. There's blood everywhere, brains on the iron, and a very surprised Phineas Gage sitting in the midst of it all. You'd think a blast like that would kill a man, right? Wrong. Phineas not only is fine, he making entries into his time book as he goes to town for the doctor. When the doctor isn't around, he then sits on the front steps of a nearby hotel and has a lengthy conversation with his landlord. All the while there's blood everywhere and a clear view into Phineas's head to his brains. And is Phineas completely unchanged by the experience? Not quite. Though he lives for quite some time after the accident, Phineas suddenly is bereft of all his social skills. Why is this? What does it mean about the brain itself? And why did Phineas live?

Like I said, there's gore galore in this puppy. But better yet, there's a lot of sound scientific information for questioning young minds. For those kids more interested in the accident itself, Phineas's skull is displayed throughout the book. You can clearly make out where the hole once was, as well as how it healed over time. Digitally rendered graphs show exactly how the tamping iron entered Mr. Gage's head and how it excited. Historical information about the state of brain science in the late 1800's is coupled with what we know (and still do not know) now. The book is filled with interesting photographs, graphs, and illustrations. For further information there's a great list of resources, as well as a fabulous glossary, and a complete index.

Now the author of this book is not a children's non-fiction author. In fact, he's a science writer for the American Society for Cell Biology at the Harvard Medical School. So how well does he write for young `uns? The answer is pretty darn well. Overall, Fleischman's text is tight and interesting. He never launches into a speculation without making it very clear what the facts behind each and every matter are. Unfortunately, the book does have an occasional dull moment. Not being particularly thrilled with neuroscience myself, I found my eyes slipping over a page or two of brain facts that I didn't feel the need to backtrack and read. Still, for the most part the book is a fascinating journey into a weird moment in history.

So if your kid has been told in school that they MUST read and write about a non--fiction title of some sort, I highly recommend dear old "Phineas Gage" to you. Never has any moment so gross rendered so great a discovery.

a great non-fiction book for everyone!
By CCags829
I just finished reading this book with a 12-year old middle schooler. Both of us loved every page of this book and the incredible story of Phineas Gage.

As a undergrad student majoring in psychology, I also found this book to be quite fascinating, as it goes into more depth over the life of this extraordinary man who survived such a freak accident.

The book is perfect for young adults as it is a work of non-fiction of the highest quality. It seems like there aren't enough non-fiction books out there today that are geared towards young readers. It is a great introduction to major topics in biology including bacteria, organization of cells, as well as an in-depth discussion of the brain. Definitely a great book for psychology and biology students alike!

The Right Stuff, by Tom Wolfe

From "America's nerviest journalist" (Newsweek)--a breath-taking epic, a magnificent adventure story, and an investigation into the true heroism and courage of the first Americans to conquer space. "Tom Wolfe at his very best" (The New York Times Book Review)

Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure; namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers, that made The Right Stuff a classic.

Amazon.com Review
Tom Wolfe began The Right Stuff at a time when it was unfashionable to contemplate American heroism. Nixon had left the White House in disgrace, the nation was reeling from the catastrophe of Vietnam, and in 1979--the year the book appeared--Americans were being held hostage by Iranian militants. Yet it was exactly the anachronistic courage of his subjects that captivated Wolfe. In his foreword, he notes that as late as 1970, almost one in four career Navy pilots died in accidents. "The Right Stuff," he explains, "became a story of why men were willing--willing?--delighted!--to take on such odds in this, an era literary people had long since characterized as the age of the anti-hero."

Wolfe's roots in New Journalism were intertwined with the nonfiction novel that Truman Capote had pioneered with In Cold Blood. As Capote did, Wolfe tells his story from a limited omniscient perspective, dropping into the lives of his "characters" as each in turn becomes a major player in the space program. After an opening chapter on the terror of being a test pilot's wife, the story cuts back to the late 1940s, when Americans were first attempting to break the sound barrier. Test pilots, we discover, are people who live fast lives with dangerous machines, not all of them airborne. Chuck Yeager was certainly among the fastest, and his determination to push through Mach 1--a feat that some had predicted would cause the destruction of any aircraft--makes him the book's guiding spirit.

Yet soon the focus shifts to the seven initial astronauts. Wolfe traces Alan Shepard's suborbital flight and Gus Grissom's embarrassing panic on the high seas (making the controversial claim that Grissom flooded his Liberty capsule by blowing the escape hatch too soon). The author also produces an admiring portrait of John Glenn's apple-pie heroism and selfless dedication. By the time Wolfe concludes with a return to Yeager and his late-career exploits, the narrative's epic proportions and literary merits are secure. Certainly The Right Stuff is the best, the funniest, and the most vivid book ever written about America's manned space program. --Patrick O'Kelley

Great book, KINDLE version FULL OF ERRORS
By Ranty
Great book, completely flubbed by Amazon. Is it so hard to run a spell check on a Kindle manuscript before publishing it? This book is filled with ridiculous OCR screwups: letters cl being turned into a nonsensical d, for instance. And there are a lot of them. Amazon needs to fix this book and send us all an updated version that doesn't hurt our eyes or our brains.

Still an entertaining story about the early US space flight program more than 30 years after it was first published
By Flying Photographer
At the time of publishing, besides the official NASA press releases there was very little information available to the public about the early US astronaut program, and as such this book represented an interesting look behind the scenes of a very public and at the same time rather secretive part of modern US history. These early astronauts basically overnight changed from being a anonymous pilots to lived their lives in the public eye.

The very entertaining way in which Tom Wolfe presents his view on their lives and the program stands the test of time, although the book looses (at least) one star due to the at times rather one-sighted comments and conclusions (like in the case of Gus Grissom). A revised edition, benefiting form the new information that has been made public since the original publication, would definitely be welcomed - recommended.

A very cool 'story'
By Mrsb
The author did an excellent job of telling each space event as it effected all the concerned parties which could be his wife, teammates or his superiors. I have lived on the spacecoast for 37 years so this book was of real interest to me and it put a personal side to my wonder filled memories of watching so many launches from the roof of our home with our boys. Or from the parking lot of an employer with customers and coworkers.

Review
Henri J. M. Nouwen, who wrote more than 40 books, remains one of the most popular spiritual writers of our time. This paperback is a revised version of a volume released in 1987. We are assaulted by images in a society where consumerism comes at us through posters, billboards, television, movies and store windows. But icons are a different thing completely. Nouwen presents meditations on four icons: the icon of the Holy Trinity, the icon of the Virgin of Vladimir, the icon of the Savior of Zvenigorod, and the icon of the Descent of the Spirit: "By giving the icons long and prayerful attention talking about them, reading about them, but mostly just gazing at them in silence I have gradually come to know them by heart. I see them now whether they are physically present or not. I have memorized them as I have memorized the Our Father and the Hail Mary, and I pray with them wherever I go." Icons are a part of the sacred liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church and are used in worship services. Nouwen points out that they do not excite our outer senses but speak to our heart. Those who gaze at icons as a spiritual practice believe they draw closer to God in the process. Nouwen presents substantive spiritual analysis of the icon of the Holy Trinity, which he sees as a pathway into the Mystery of God's self-revelation. The icon of the Virgin of Vladimir is an invitation to enter the divine milieu with gratitude and joy. Nouwen sees in the eyes of the icon of the Savior of Zvenigorod a revelation about the mystery of the Incarnation. And, finally, in the icon of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, he feels a celebration of the power and meaning of community. Nouwen concludes: "Working on these meditations has been a great delight. Praying became writing and writing became praying. More energy was granted than consumed in the process. I fervently hope that you who read these meditations will experience some of this same delight, and thus deepen your desire to behold the beauty of the Lord expressed in these holy images." --Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, www.spiritualityandpractice.com

About the Author

this book is a fantastic window into the world of icons and their functions
By Kyle Gould
I will echo many reviews here: this book is a fantastic window into the world of icons and their functions. While giving a little history of each of the four icons he uses to illustrate his points, Nouwen spends a lot of time explaining how he came to see different theological and spiritual truths within the icons. Praying with (not to) the icons provides a different medium for prayer that is bound to be helpful for those that try.

This book cannot be recommended enough, and a huge benefit is that the language is clear, concise, and to the point. This is not like other heady religious books.

It's Nouwen again...
By albert l adams
I've never read anything by Nouwen that I didn't like. I have been to Eastern Europe several times, and each time, tried to purchase an icon or some religious artifact to remember my trip by. I had seen Orthodox Christians praying with Icons (not praying to, mind you...praying with), and wanted a better understanding of the practice. Nouwen writes that they are to be used like windows into heaven, not as base objects to be worshiped. Nouwen actually takes several icons and explains the meaning behind them (such as the empty space at the table in Rublev's "Trinity") in order to help the reader learn to focus on certain aspects of faith. Offers clarity to the practice of praying with icons. A good companion piece to Linette Martin's "Sacred Doorways".

An Inspirational Read!
By Amazon Customer
This is a beautiful book to read if you have an interest in the beautiful icons and the meaning behind them. Perhaps you have seen these icons in Catholic and Orthodox churches here and abroad, icons are a Liturgical Art, and have significant meaning behind each step in the painting process. The author has done a beautiful job of explaining the meaning as he sees it with each of five icons. It is a beautiful book to own.

On-Chip Communication Architectures: System on Chip Interconnect (Systems on Silicon), by Sudeep Pasricha, Nikil Dutt

Over the past decade, system-on-chip (SoC) designs have evolved to address the ever increasing complexity of applications, fueled by the era of digital convergence. Improvements in process technology have effectively shrunk board-level components so they can be integrated on a single chip. New on-chip communication architectures have been designed to support all inter-component communication in a SoC design. These communication architecture fabrics have a critical impact on the power consumption, performance, cost and design cycle time of modern SoC designs. As application complexity strains the communication backbone of SoC designs, academic and industrial R&D efforts and dollars are increasingly focused on communication architecture design.

This book is a comprehensive reference on concepts, research and trends in on-chip communication architecture design. It will provide readers with a comprehensive survey, not available elsewhere, of all current standards for on-chip communication architectures.

Excellent and comprehensive coverage
By Per Gunnar Kjeldsberg
This book gives an excellent and comprehensive coverage of on-chip communication architectures. It focuses on bus-based architectures, but also includes chapters on Network-on-Chip and emerging technologies. It is easy to read (the advanced topic taken into consideration) and covers the topic in a complete way that I have not seen in other books. Since it is written by researchers in the field, it is natural that their research is detailed somewhat more than other work. This is not a problem, however, as other research is also very well covered. The list of references in each chapter is extensive and a very good starting point for further even more in-depth studies.

As a Professor in CS/EE, I consider using the book in advanced design courses. I will certainly recommend it for those of my master students who need in-depth knowledge in this area for the thesis work. I am also convinced that the book will be very useful for design engineers in industry.

A comprehensive treatment of on-chip interconnect
By Theodore D. Huffmire
This book provides a very informative and comprehensive exploration of on-chip interconnect. The future of computer architecture is all about interconnect because it will dominate on-chip real estate and power consumption. Careful design of interconnect is essential to achieve design goals that include performance and security. This book has extensive references at the end of each chapter, which I found to be very useful. It's a thought-provoking subject and a thought-provoking book. Computer architects will be studying on-chip communication architectures for a long time, as this is a complex and rich field.

Great
By R.P.G.
This book is an excellent study that gives background on the historical cultural makeup of El Paso, TX. Garcia explores the relationship between Anglo Americans and Mexicans/Mexican Americans. The author argues, among other things, that economic interdependence led to an atmosphere of racial and ethnic cooperation. It puts to bed the myth of the so-called racial harmony that exists in many borderland communities. It is however an older study that could perhaps help another generation of scholars pick up where Garcia left off.

*Note on the only other review of this book: It's sad that people would give a book they never even bothered to read a one-star rating.
