DNA defines an organism: epigenetics tells how to translate that code into a real live organism

As the book explains, while DNA is the code that defines an organism, epigenetics provides the notes on how to translate the code into a real live organism.

The book is formatted for modern readers. It is short as Kindle books go – only 1385 locations. It is divided into chapters about one page each in length. I include the chapter index at the end of the review. It is rich in diagrams.

In writing such a book, the author must strike a balance between readability and completeness. She has to make some assumptions about the reader. This book appears to assume that the reader will be college educated, not flummoxed by the introduction of new technical terms, and somewhat familiar with genetics. In other words, it is not for everybody.

I am 50 years out of college but have read much of the popular literature on genetics, starting with Dawkins' Selfish Gene. I found that the book demanded my attention, forcing me to reread a few chapters in order to fully grasp the concepts, but in the end quite satisfying.

DNA, the blueprint for our bodies, is invariant. Every cell of the body contains the same long, complex DNA molecules. However, DNA always exists among other, supporting molecules, which do differ from cell to cell. These epigenetic assistants control how the information from the DNA is translated into building proteins for the various types of cells within the body.

DNA stands for diribonucleic acid – the double helix, half from the father, half from the mother. RNA stands for ribonucleic acid, the more general form. Proteins are formed by what is called messenger RNA. These molecules are copied from short subsets of the whole DNA molecule. Messenger RNA tells the cell how to build the proteins required to be, for instance, a brain cell or a liver cell.

The structures surrounding DNA in a given cell includes markers that control which part of the DNA will be used as templates for building amino acids within the cell and which will be ignored. There are different structures for different cells.

As the chapter titles below indicate, a lot of things affect the epigenetic material surrounding DNA. Among these are aging and exposure to chemicals such as those in tobacco. While the DNA may not change within an individual, the body parts made according to that DNA model do change via epigenetics.

Epigenetic diagnoses for disease, and epigenetic-based cures for disease our already in place, and many more appear to be on the horizon. This book will be useful reading for investors interested in the next big things in biotechnology. It will help them read investment product prospectuses and annual reports from companies involved in esoteric new technologies.

The book is truly a five-star effort. The author deserves a great deal of credit for striking such a good balance among readability, completeness and bulk.

About the Author
Heather Graham (b. 1953) is a bestselling author of more than 150 romance, suspense, and historical novels that have sold seventy-five million copies worldwide. Raised in Florida, Graham went to college for theater arts, and spent several years acting, singing, and bartending before she devoted herself to writing. Her first novel, When Next We Love, was published in 1982. Under the pseudonym Shannon Drake, she published dozens of romance novels such as Bride of the Wind (1992), Damsel in Distress (1992), and The King’s Pleasure (1998). Graham has since branched out into supernatural horror, historical fiction, and suspense, with titles such as Tall, Dark, and Deadly (1999), Long, Lean, and Lethal (2000), and Dying to Have Her (2001). In 2003 the Romance Writers of America, whose Florida chapter Graham founded, granted her a lifetime achievement award. She lives, writes, and scuba dives in Florida with her husband and five children.

One of the Greatest Romance Novels you'll ever read.

This was the first romance novel I read and as far as I am concerned the best book I've ever read. Shannon Drake puts everything you could ever ask for in a romance book; deceit, revenge, love, jealousy, steamy sex scenes, family, and a baby. What more could you ask for. The plot is very interesting and enjoyable to read. This book inspired me to read more romance novels and to start to write one of my own. Since I have read this book, I have bought all of her other novels and enjoyed them immensely. I would suggest to anyone to read this book, it really is a keepsake.

forever entangled

I've read this book a number of times. Shannon Drake a.k.a Heather Graham is definitely one of my favorite authors. The novel features a headstrong but passionate heroine who is caught in a gently horrid nightmare that sees to the end of her innocence. The hero is pure male. Bold, brilliant and utterly smitten, he struggles to balance his suspicions of the girl with his lust for her. If you enjoy the concept "break up to make up," you'll love Rose and Pierce's story about two people who struggle to let go and let love. A must read, indeed.

Surprisingly good!

I actually enjoyed this Shannon Drake novel, and believe me, I've been disappointed in other Drake novels, but this one captured my attention. I fell in love with the hero of the novel. I relished his strength and his love for protection of his 'unwilling' colonial bride. The plot was quite far-fetched, but Shannon Drake managed to entwine the far-fetched plot with sinister murders, framed for murder, and of course, the ever present loyal friendship of King Charles II. I've rated 'Bride of the Wind' a 3 1/2, only because I've compared it to other novels written by another favorite author of mine whom sets many of her novels during this particular era. I am a loyal fan of Heather Graham, but as Drake, she has been disappointing at times, however, 'Bride of the Wind' and 'Princess of Fire' are now two of my favorite novels by 'Graham' as 'Drake'.

I am very happy with the purchase. It contains 184 full - colour Royalty - free illustrations, including the common and botanical names. There is also an index at the back with one page for the common names and the other page for the botanical names. Each page contains four illustrations. It comes with full colour CD - Rom. Exactly what I was looking for

This is a great resource. I'm a graphic designer and have been looking for full color illustrations of flowers and fruit like this for a while. Lots of online stock photo/illustration sites sell similar artwork for anywhere from $75-250 each. Here you get a large variety for under $20.

Classic botanicals

There's amazing depth and beauty to the botanical paintings by Pierre Redoute that print crisply. The graphics are easy to resize for different applications and the selection is extensive, with an emphasis on rose species and lots and lots of fruits. The images beg to be used for making stationery...a red rose on a sticker to attach to a valentine's envelope is irresistable, primroses add interest to a letter written to a friend in springtime. All the images give both common and botanical names. They make you want to create a gardening newsletter.

Elliot Fratkin shares the story of his early anthropological fieldwork in Kenya in the 1970s. After Fratkin reunited Lonyoki with his son and wife, Lonyoki adopted Fratkin into his family, and Fratkin continues his close friendship with Lonyoki’s son Lembalen today.

Elliot Fratkin has written an insightful, enjoyable, and very readable book about his fieldwork and life-long friendship with a family of diviners ( laibon ) in northern Kenya. The work is strongly autobiographical, recounting how a young, rebellious American anthropologist in the 1970s found himself conducting dissertation research among Ariaal, a Samburu-related nomadic community of northern Kenya. not just for academics

Yes, I read it for a class, but I've since passed it on to my parents who are also enjoying it. The author is writing the book from the perspective of an experienced academic, using his field notes from his first field experience, so we get the perspective of both. He blends narrative and insight so that it does not read like a text, yet educates the reader to the complexities of the situations and the anthropological perspective. He is writing about a place and people he clearly cares deeply for, and has insight that is important for understanding such issues as climate change, foreign aid (that is NOT helpful if the providers don't understand the local situation) and acculturation.
NOTE: even the non-readers in the class enjoyed it, and discussions were lively..

I knew Elliot in Kenya, and heard some of these stories firsthand, but it was immensely fun reading how all those stories fit together, and get a more in depth glimpse into Elliot's research, way back when.

Gripping, Funny, Touching, Compelling - Love This Show!

This play is a compilation of monologues and scenes encompassing a wide array of parenting stories. The show is laid out in five chapters. The first chapter is about birth and babies, the second is about school-aged kids, the third focuses more on sex and puberty, the fourth is about graduation and college, and the fifth chapter is about having adult children. Some of the stories are downright hilarious and others are heartbreaking. The emotional roller coaster ride is one you just can't anticipate. There is such a wonderful mix of characters - from all cultures and backgrounds. This is an easy play to put on with a minimal set. It can be performed as a staged reading or as a full-on professional production with all the works - lines memorized and all. Sound cues are also minimal. The lighting could make or break the show. It calls for at least 3 women and 1 man to flesh out the numerous characters, but you could easily cast a dozen women and several men if you wanted to. Worth reading and definitely worth seeing if you have the chance!

Twenty monologues or stories arranged in five different chapters or scenes for four or more actors. Can also be performed as a series of readings from music stands with as many as sixteen actors.
