Writing a book about the CIA is unique challenge.� Every word in every line of the manuscript must be approved by the CIA before it can be released, even to a publisher.� The author must vet and edit his or her own work for much of the journey. It is a significant burden that can take months of back and forth approvals and disapprovals, until the skirmish is finally over.� Some publishers are afraid of taking on the CIA by producing a book that calls the actions of the Agency into question. This was especially true for From the Company of Shadows. In this book, much of my writing has exposed activities the CIA has engaged in that are embarrassing and call into question its adherence to the Constitution. Running a manuscript by the CIA for approval is like submitting a crime report to the bugler before it is filed.� It is not an easy task. So, every word that has made it into this book is precious. I am certain some of the information is like concentrated lemon juice; causing the reader to pucker a little. Restrictions of secrecy have prevented me from expanding further.

Shipp provides a stunning example of the CIA's concealment of negligence by including excerpts from his book on the subject, blacked out by CIA censors. He spent months going back and forth, line by line, word by word, negotiating with the CIA for the book's release.

He also supervised the Department of State Anti Terrorism Assistance program and managed the protective detail assigned to the president of Afghanistan following the US invasion.�

Excellent Book!

From the very beginning, Shipp paints a picture that really grabs you and pulls you into the CIA World. From the secrets we all knew existed to the abominations we never thought possible, Shipp's experience and service to our country makes for an exciting and tantalizing read. BEWARE...if you are a slow reader, you need to carve out some time to read, because once you pick this book up you won't want to put it down.

fascinating true story

This was a fascinating true story of a man's role in CIA operations; you will gain insights in the operation of the nation's top spy agency that have never before been disclosed. This story is told by someone who has been there and placed his life on the line for his country. This book could not have come at a better time with the current events unfolding in our nation and abroad. I respect Mr. Shipp as he is one of the only CIA officers in history to publicly stand up against one of the most powerful agencies in the world and survive. This is a book that you absolutely must read. It is a virtual encyclopedia of internal and external US intelligence and CIA operations.

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695) wrote her most famous prose work, La Respuesta a Sor Filotea, in 1691 in response to her bishop's injunction against her intellectual pursuits. A passionate and subversive defense of the rights of women to study, to teach, and to write, it predates by almost a century and a half serious writings on any continent about the position and education of women. Moreover, notes Ilan Stavans in his introduction, it has become "a cornerstone of Hispanic-American identity ... at once a chronicle of the tense gender relations in the Western Hemisphere, a rich portrait of the social behavior that prevailed more than a century before independence from Spain was gained in 1810, and the very first intellectual autobiography written by a criolla in a hemisphere known for its solipsism, introversion, and allergy to public confessions. A superb introduction to a great mind

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz is one of those remarkable literary figures whose extraordinary body of work forces one to either reevaluate or refine one's ideas about the complex interrelationships between religion, gender, national identity, and ethnicity. A nun who lived in seventeenth century Mexico, she distinguished herself as a poet, playwright, and prose writer.
"Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent introduction to the life and work of this fascinating woman. This selection of her works includes her famous prose piece addressed to "Sor Filotea de la Cruz," a hearty helping of her poetry, and two selections from her dramatic corpus. The bilingual format of the text, with Sor Juana's Spanish original on each even-numbered page and Margaret Sayers Peden's elegant English translation on each odd-numbered page, allows one to easily compare the two versions.
The distinguished scholar Ilan Stavans has written an extensive 32 page introduction. Stavans describes in detail the historical and cultural context from which Sor Juana wrote; his sensitive and intelligent portrait of the woman and her age made me appreciate and enjoy her writings even more.
Sor Juana takes on themes that are still relevant (and often hotly debated) more than three centuries after she wrote these works. The response to Sor Filotea is a defense of female intellectual aspiration in a male-dominated culture; in the defense Sor Juana critically responds to those who use the Judeo-Christian Bible as a tool for intimidating and marginalizing women. With certain factions of the "religious right" still using the Bible as a weapon for demonizing certain individuals and social agendas, Sor Juana's words continue to ring fresh and clear.
Equally extraordinary is Sor Juana's loa (a dramatic scene which prefaces a longer play) to "The Divine Narcissus." The loa is an allegory depicting the early contact between Christianity and the religion of the Aztecs; in this piece I detect a subtle satirical thrust which adds to the complexity of Sor Juana's vision.
Sor Juana was a masterful stylist in multiple literary genres, and her depth of psychological and moral insight adds to her stature as a literary giant. Nobody should consider herself or himself literate in the fields of women's studies or Latin American studies without having read the works of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. "Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent resource for both independent reading and classroom use. Enjoy Sor Juana's artistry, and reflect on her ideas.

Female Intellectualism

A great intellectual is not commonly thought of to be a woman, especially in 17th century New Spain. In the midst of the highly structured Baroque literary period, an illegitimate child was baptized as Juana Ram�rez de Asbaje, spent her adolescence at court, and left to become a nun where she could continue her studies in peace, rather than marrying. Although she was almost entirely self-educated, the word quickly spread of her intelligence. This caused envy and animosity towards her that she tried to avoid her entire adult life. Four years before she died, the church forced her to give up her writings and worldly studies. In her letter of response to this request, (included in the book) she became the first woman in Latin America to defend her gender's right to study and write as men could. Much of her work was commissioned, but more is being discovered of her autobiographical writings. This book includes one of the few known poems (Primero Sue�o) that was not commissioned. The book is in Spanish and English on opposing pages. This is very advantageous if you are bilingual, and even if you aren't, I can't say enough about Margaret Sayers Peden's translations. Not only does she give you as close to word for word; she also preserves the original structure, themes, and rhyme schemes that are so essential in Baroque literature. Even if you go no further than this book, you will not be disappointed. It has a very complete collection of her most famous works. Unfortunately, so few people in the English-speaking U.S. has even heard of Sor Juana In�s de la Cruz. I was first introduced to her wonderful poetry in a Mexican History / English dyad in college. Since that first poem I read, I have been searching for books of her works, and about her life. I highly recommend the addiction.

Raul is worse than Fidel

I read this book after reading "Los Funerales de Castro. Both books worth reading if one has an interest in Cuba and the Brothers Castro. I am not a totally fluent Spanish reader but this book not hard to read if one has a Spanish Dictionary for some key words not understood. "La Pulga Que Cabalg� Al Tigre" also by vincente Botin reads like a mystery novel. (Sadly this is no concocted story) It is the truth about two brothers who have destroyed a nation for personal ambition. I have now lent my copy to many Cubans who tell me that they learned so much about the two brothers that they never knew and certainly was not revealed to them while living in Cuba.

I wish the book would be translated into English so that Americans would have a better understanding of the land, and people and the cruel dictatorship that is present only 90 miles from Florida.

How to "Never Run Out of Parts in Production" Ever Again

Ask the operators in most companies, "Do you ever run out of materials?", and the answer is "All the time." But if you ask this same question to a company that implements the 1-hour delivery system described in MAKING MATERIALS FLOW, the answer is "Never!" This workbook is an excellent resource for setting up a PFEP (Plan For Every Part), creating a parts supermarket, and establishing a delivery system. When I was a Lean Manager in Corning, I first used this material delivery system with manufacturing cells that assembled telephone network interface devices (that plastic box mounted on the side of your house where your phone line enters). By eliminating material shortages that frequently plagued these lines (stopping hundreds of employees' work), we saved over $500,000 annually.

I was also fortunate to attend Rick Harris' workshop for MAKING MATERIALS FLOW; this is one of my favorite Lean books, and one of my most enjoyable tools of the trade; if you want to end the stagnation between your production processes, I highly recommend reading this book (along with CREATING CONTINUOUS FLOW -- Mike Rother and Rick Harris) and putting the concepts into practice. The Lean Enterprise Institute's workbooks are top-notch, and they have definitely helped me become a Lean expert.

Short on info for plants that also fabricate components

While this book does a good job of defining how to improve efficiency and delivery performance through improvements in material transfer in an assembly area, it completely ignores plants that must juggle fabrication along with assembly....which is a substantial number of U.S. Plants. Understand that this book is premised on the Toyota Production System, and automotive plants generally assemble purchased components into a final assembled product. Things like engine assembly area often done elsewhere. Fab and assembly in the same building poses a different set of problems and opportunities.

I'm very new to Evernote, and I was looking for a guide to get me started and well on my way to getting the most out of Evernote. The author does a terrific job explaining and giving examples! I've started using Evernote, and I love how I'm able to capture information so I can come back to it instead of have to feel pressured to read everything right at that moment.

This would probably better be titled Evernote 101. If you're brand new to apps, then this would be helpful. If you have ever used any sort of online app, you're probably going to know/understand everything this book tells you. Definitely glad I didn't spend any money on this.
