The board is now set, let us begin

By far, this is my favorite of the three books in The Cadicle series. This time we’re not focusing completely on the boy genius/future commander Wil. Enter Saera, outcast, intelligent, shy, unlikely candidate from Earth, who takes the opportunity to join the TSS as a new beginning to her life. She quickly realizes she can only escape her specific situation, not the behaviors that caused it. Saera decides to fully embrace her choice and be the best at what the TSS can make her. Her intelligence and determination grabs Wils attention and soon a friendship is formed. The relationship is exactly what Wil needs to break out of his shell/depression and enjoy life. This is exactly how I'd expect a teen to behave, super genius or not.

Pros:
• This book is more meaty and substantial than the previous books, so it’s a much longer read. Having an advance version, I’ve read my pre-release copy twice now.
• The character development of Wil is great. Wil is treated more like a person, less like an object as I felt he was in the previous book. There is less of the “you’re going to save the Taran race” and more “we’ve a problem and are hoping you’ll solve it” attitude towards Wil. His anxiously awaited graduation and the challenges he faces are handled with intelligence and grace.
• Our view of this world (universe) keeps expanding and we fill in more backstory, including more on the Priesthood, the Sietinen High Dynasty, the Bakzan empire.

Cons:
• None I can think of. This book addressed the problems I had with the previous two books, namely the length of the novel and the time jump between Architects of Destiny (Cadicle #1) and Veil of Reality (Cadicle #2).

Romance, political intrigue and action

Bonds of Resolve is the exciting third book in the Cadicle series and I became so engrossed with the story that I had trouble putting it down, even to go to sleep!!!! This series overall has me absolutely rivited with it's twists and turns and mystery - if only the author could write faster so I don't have to wait too long for the next book. Bonds of Resolve introduces a new character - Saera is a young woman from Earth who has been selected for TSS training and who just so happens to catch the eye of Wil Sights. The two develop a close friendship that slowly develops into romance. They are both well suited to each other - both have had difficult experiences that have left mental scars. Through their relationship they are able support each other's needs. What I really enjoy about Amy DuBoff's writing is her ability to get into the minds of her characters and their complex inter-relationships with other characters. Du Boff has a true understanding of the complex entwining of emotions - both physical and mental that people feel when they fall in love - there is a true tenderness and honesty - a meeting of minds in the love that develops between Wil and Saera, There is no doubt that both characters will be a force to be reckoned with against the Bekzan (the enemies of Tararia). As ever the Priesthood remain in the background, manipulting the course of events and their power is evident in Tararian politics - The Bonds of Resolve throws up more questions - like why there are no women in the Priesthood and what their true motivations are???? Can't wait to find out further developments in the plot-line - highly recommend the Cadicle series.

Book #3 in the Cadicle series is a much welcome addition to a series that I have enjoyed getting in to. Book one was a good intro to this interesting universe. Book two was good setup for the story we are jumping in to. And now book 3 gives us a great start to the epic space opera that this series is supposed to be.

I enjoyed the fact that book three is getting us into the meat and potatoes of the conflict against the Bakzen. We actually get to see just how big this conflict is and is going to be. There are more things I'd like to say about it but I'd rather not give away details that are better discovered just by reading the book. I will say though that I do like how the author addresses the stress put on the main character. Often times books ignore just how hard and complex large scale operations can be for those involved. I feel DuBoff really does a good job of adding in the details often left out in such massive stories, and one of the reasons I was interested in reading a "space opera" in the first place rather than the usual sci-fi series which is just different stories in different books that happen to take place in the same universe with the same or similar characters.

At the end of the day, I can't wait to read book 4 as I expect there will be a lot of awesome things contained within its pages.

About the Author
Thomas Hauser is the author of thirty-nine books. His first work, Missing, was made into an Academy Award–winning film. He later authored Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times, the definitive biography of the most famous fighter ever. In 2004, the Boxing Writers Association of America honored Hauser with the Nat Fleischer Award for Career Excellence in Boxing Journalism.

Rounding Up

Opening another year of boxing as recapped by Thomas Hauser is like getting a Christmas present. To pay him the highest possible compliment, he is our generations fistic answer to A.J. Liebling.

That being said, the paucity of writing about the actual fights from 2009 (the year in boxing this book covers)speaks volumes of the nadir that boxing has reached. There were simply no decent big fights to write about this year. The two real "event" fights, both involving Manny Pacquiao were not really competitive.

But one doesn't really need to pick up a Thomas Hauser year in review book just to read about the fights of the year. Hauser leads off with a tribute to the fighting life of Sugar Ray Robinson. He compares his influence in boxing to that of Babe Ruth's in baseball. The superlative standard bearer. The tragedy of his legacy is that no footage exists of his greatest fights in the 1940's, when he was at the height of his greatness. The sadness of his decline is talked of, and also his arrogance and the ugly side of his personality are openly discussed.

One interesting aside is the story of the great H. J. Heinz, the brilliant sportswriter who was commissioned to ghost write Robinson's biography in the early 1970's. Heinz asked Sugar Ray about his AWOL episode during World War II. He got what he felt was an evasive answer, and feeling he could not objectively paint a true picture of the greatest boxer of all-time, declined to continue. It is hard to imagine many journalists in this day and age making similar choices.

Another interesting entry is the journal of Dave Wolf, who was Joe Frazier's confidant. Wolf chronicles Frazier thoughts and feelings toward his nemesis, Muhammad Ali, who caused Frazier deep pain both in and out of the ring. Frazier was one of the bravest warriors ever to lace on the gloves. Give Hauser credit, he is very close to Ali, yet he alowed these passages to see print in his book. For the Ali fan, it shows another side to the man, and is painful to read.

There are the chapters on some very interesting characters around the fight game, who do not participate in the ring, and also a chapter dicussing books that made their way into print about boxing.

I have read four of these year in review books by Hauser, and I anticipate the count moving higher.

If you love boxing you have to have it

There is no bull chit in Thomas's book...
He tell it all like it is and backs down only when he knows the people he is being confronted by are liers and thieves, He refuses totake the easy road and takes you into the bowles of Boxing and it's dirty and alway refreshing sides.
A wonderful anagoly of a very intriguing and fearless man

It is a cool great detailed read that takes you in the ring and I men Ouch he pulls no punches

close access to all the significant players while he also
follows and reports insightfully on people you have never

The Ultimate M.R. James

M.R. James represents, for me, the nexus of two of my interests: the literature of England-Between-the-Wars, and ghost/horror fiction. I have read most of James's stories many times, and my enjoyment of them has actually increased with each re-reading. I read with interest of the publication of this book, but wondered if I really needed to buy it, since I already had all of James's stories -- or so I thought! I was delighted to discover that this collection actually contains several stories which I had never seen before! That fact alone made the book well worth my having. In addition, there is superior annotation which clarifies many points concerning the stories I knew. And, on top of all that, this edition is very nicely printed and bound! A real treasure for a number of reasons!

Without a doubt the best collection of ghost stories

First published in 1931, Colected Ghost Stories is a collection of most of M.R. James much revered stories. These stories were all first written for publication in magazines or for his famous Christmas readings, and were subsequently collected into four seperate volumes: Ghoast Stories of an Antiquary (1904), More Ghost Stories (1911), A Thin Ghost and Others (1919), and A Warning to the Curious (1925). Three stories that were published in magazines following the first publication of this work, and do not appear in this reprint; they are: The Experiment, The Malice of Inanimate Objects, and A Vignette.
James' skill for conceiving and presenting ghost stories seems to have developed at relatively young age, and his reading of some of his stories at King's College at Christmastime was a quite popular event. But ghost stories were, unfortunately, not James' priority; he was an antiquarian, and much respected one at that. He was also a noted linguist, paleographer, medievalist and biblical scholar--fields that all influenced his stories.
While it is safe to say that these ghost stories are among the best ever written, their style and subject matter are still a matter of taste. So it is difficult to catagorically recommend this book, but I doubt that any lover of ghost stories will be able to put this book down without difficulty after sampling but a story or two.

A book to be read in stages, not all at once

Born in 1862, M. R. James was a Victorian with a love of ghost stories. Many of the tales in this collection were meant to be read aloud a Christmas or New Year gatherings; it shows in their conversational tone. There are 33 stories in over 400 pages- with 48 pages of notes. I've never before seen endnotes in fiction, but I found them helpful. The author makes many references to places and events in England that an American would likely not understand, and the many colloquialisms of the time sometimes baffled me until I looked in the back of the book. I read right through this book, which turned out to not be the right way of approaching it. Read one after the other, they tended to run together and lose their effect. These stories would be best read one or two in an evening, perhaps read out loud- preferably by firelight. But it was a library book, so I persevered.

`Ghost stories' is not really the right name for a lot of these stories. Many of them feature not ghosts but demons, things that go bump in the night, haunted or bespelled pictures, rooms, binoculars, hills and other inanimate objects. James seemed to have a peculiar horror of animate fabric, as it features in several tales, in the form of evil curtains, pillowcases, blankets, etc., which sounds silly but when it comes down to it, would you want to confront drapes that form into a human shape and try to smother you? For the main part (although there are a couple of exceptions) the horror in these stories in not of the modern variety where the gore is splattered across the pages. James creates a sense of disturbing unease, a feeling that puts the hair on the back of your neck up, the sense that something is really NOT all right, and that if one is smart, one will get the heck out of that house/cemetery/library before the thing you don't really see becomes visible. Highly enjoyable, but take your time reading it.
