Rock writer Eliot ( Phil Ochs: The Death of a Rebel , Watts, 1989) chronicles Springsteen's rise to stardom during the mid-1970s. By effectively patching together lengthy quotes, he outlines the rock star's New Jersey childhood, mentions his first bands, and concentrates on Springsteen's relationship and 1976 split with Appel, who managed the singer/guitarist to his Born To Run (1975) success and whose recollections form the basis of this book. Though overrating the importance of Appel, who is cast as a victim, and unable to interview either Springsteen or current manager Jon Landau, Eliot delivers a readable, sometimes fascinating text that sheds new light on the 1975 selling of Springsteen and should be read together with Dave Marsh's more laudatory biographies, Born To Run ( LJ 11/1/79) and Glory Days (Pantheon, 1987). In an interview at the end of the audio version of Down Thunder Road, author/reader Marc Eliot refers to Bruce Springsteen as a Hamlet. Despite the implicit range of this literary reference, the boundaries of Eliot's own work are much narrower. Forsaking any real examination of Springsteen's work itself, Eliot instead traces the rise and fall of former manager Mike Appel's relationship with Springsteen. Eliot's narration is straightforward and well-executed. He jumps nimbly between protagonists with the simplest changes of inflection and intonation�no small feat considering the large amount of directly quoted material, including a highly effective dramatization of court transcripts. i liked getting this side of the Bruce story.
It definitely humanizes Mike Appel and he deserved a better shake than he got. but what other outcome can u expect from two hard driving obsessive personalities? ( kinda reminds me of the john huston movie: treasure of the sierra madre). Enjoy!

A book every aspiring musician should read!

The title sounds a little too good to be true doesn't it? Normally, it would be easy to discount a book with a title like this, but knowing that Douglas Niedt was the author I was excited to read it and confident that it would offer substantive information that musicians could use in their careers.

The first thing to understand is what this book is not. Niedt does not promise to make you a better guitarist, a famous musician, or a even millionaire (one who has a net worth of one million dollars or more) in his book. What he will do is make you think long and hard about whether you wish make the commitment to become an entrepreneurial musician, and offer lots of good advice on how to begin and grow your business so that you can make a million dollars or more over the course of your career.

Niedt covers a lot of ground, but most of the book can be divided two distinct concepts: entrepreneurial thinking and understanding common business practices. These two concepts are seamlessly woven together throughout with the earlier chapters generally discussing entrepreneurial thinking and later chapters relating more specific information about business practices that apply to musicians.

Throughout the book, the author reflects on his own life as a student, performer, teacher, and businessperson. He also incorporates many anecdotes that illustrate typical challenges that have been overcome successfully by famous musicians and businesspeople throughout history.

"Do you really want to do this? Do you have what it takes?" asks an early chapter. A short survey will help young people who may have big dreams but no realistic idea of what it means to be a musician to put things into perspective. After each survey question, there are reality checks that will encourage the reader to reflect on their attitudes and expectations about a career in music and whether or not they possess the drive and self-discipline to succeed. I find that Niedt strikes just the right balance here. He is careful not to discourage the reader but is very realistic about the sacrifices that must be made in order to make a living playing music.

The first two sections of the book include several essays on topics such as: keeping a positive attitude, setting goals, evaluating oneself, choosing an educational path, how to get along with other people, and more. These chapters are definitely motivational, but also make good business sense for anyone who wants to be self-employed and stay optimistic in the face of adversity. This section also includes two of my favorite chapters: "Talent is Not the Answer" and "You're a Failure - Congratulations!"

As the book proceeds, more in-depth information about what it takes to be a self-employed musician is explored. Advice is given on virtually all aspects of setting up a business as a sole proprietorship or LLC, recording your own CDs, building a website that will help you sell your music, knowing what to charge for shipping, maintaining a database, understanding tax laws and much more. The chapter on maintaining a database was particularly a good one for me as I am always trying to find a better way to organize my records of students and business contacts electronically.

Most of the business information passed on in the book I already know. I've learned it along the way from colleagues, teachers, tax and financial advisers, and friends. Some things I found out through my own research. Almost all of it was learned after college as I struggled to establish myself as a teacher and musician. I can only imagine how much easier my path may have been with a book like this one to guide me.

Douglas Niedt has written a book that every young person aspiring to a career in music should read. I will definitely be recommending it to many of my students and their parents. It paints a very clear and realistic picture of what the career of a professional musician looks like. If you are starting a career in music or know someone who is, this is required reading.

Finally, if you are not a guitarist, you'll still want to buy the book. Doug may be targeting guitarists with his title, but the book is not about playing the guitar, it's about being an entrepreneurial musician. All of the information inside is equally applicable to pianists, saxophonists, trombonists, etc. I'm guessing it will take a trombonist a little longer to reach the million-dollar mark, but that's another story.

Good Advice and a Great Read.

The best book on the market about making it in the music or entertainment business is Doug Niedt's "How to Make a Million Dollars Playing the Guitar."

Why do I say that? First of all Mr Niedt is one of the world's greatest guitar players, he has been there and done that; just check out his concert, recording or teaching background. Second, Mr. Niedt is from Missouri (the 'show me' state). Like Harry Truman, Doug tells it like it is.

Doug gives you 9 questions to answer, for example, "I can't imagine myself doing anything else." Doug then runs you through how to set up goals, have the right attitude, keeping your finances in check and many more lessons. By the time you are finished with the book, you will have a guideline for success.

One of the striking things I learned when reading the book is that talent does not count that much. Doug explains that there are a lot of famous entertainers who do not have much talent, but they do have an audience which is very important!

Doug's book also has chapters on selling your own CDs, good business procedures, creating a web site etc. Bravo Doug, I recommend this book without equal or qualification.

I enjoyed the book! It has the straight forward approach that keeps a reader turning pages and asking inner questions that need to be asked.
The principles presented strongly apply to any realm of personal success; which many of us need reminding.

Let me just start off by saying that whatever I say won't do this book justice. So please just go read it yourself!

In the spirit of Harry Potter, Michelle Harrison takes us on a wild ride full of mystery with her unlikely main character Tanya. See, Tanya has a bit of a uncommon condition. She can see fairies. Not cute Tinker Bell fairies but vengeful devious fairies. When the fairies play a trick on Tanya it's the last straw for Tanya's Mom. She sends her away to live with her grandmother. This is a terrible turn of events in Tanya's world but when clues start popping up in a 50 year old mystery Tanya may just get some of her question answered.

I had heard some really great things about this book so when the chance came to read it of course I took it. I was not disappointed! 13 Treasures is full of mystery. There was never a dull moment! When I wasn't reading this, I wanted to be reading this.

All of the characters were very very well written! I loved Tanya. She was mature and confident when other 13 year olds would have run screaming. All the secondary characters were great too. I loved Fabian and his Dad. I Loved the fairies also!

There are tons of books out there about girls who see fairies. This one was no different but somehow it stood out! I really loved it. It read like a movie. I actually see this being made into a movie in the near future. I had a lot of fun reading this and I plan on buying the sequel from Book Depository because there's no way I'm waiting until the American release date!!

A fabulous read for middle graders interested in faery tales and fantasy. Not too heavy on either, the mystical history created by Harrison was both realistic and understated. Often times, in my experience, and author gets so drawn into the creation of the other-worldly aspects of this type of story that it can tend to overwhelm. Not so in the case of 13 Treasures. The back story here is light on the faery-land and heavy on the character building. This is not to say that we don't see the world they live in because to some degree we do, just not at the expense of the events of the world that Tanya and her family are a part of.

The story itself was equally interesting. At three-hundred and fifty pages it wasn't short (particularly, I imagine, for some middle grade readers) but at no time did the story lag or become so repetitive in nature that I found myself thinking "man she could have cut out those two chapters". It had a bevy of fantastic characters including the main heroine Tanya. Spunky, defiant and true to herself she was the picture of endurance and patience as she did her best to solve the mystery presented as it unfurled. Furthermore, her foe Morewenna was just the right combination of maniacally evil and manipulative. Using creatures from another realm in consort with magic she plotted against Tanya and her family in a way that wasn't remotely over the top given the subject matter of the story.

To delve deeper into the story and characters would only serve to ruin the fun twists and turns of the story for the reader so I will leave you with this....

This book is bound to keep your middle grader's attention, moreover it's great fun for the young adult reader as well. If you are looking for a good book to segue into the realm of fantasy 13 Treasures would certainly be well worth your attention.

I adore this cover as it's what drew me to the book before I knew what it was about. 13 Treasures isn't about the Tinkerbell type faeries, these are the traditional faeries who can't be trusted, can be ruthless and continue their relentless torment on young Tanya. It's the first time the faeries have threatened Tanya from telling anyone she can see them. What Tanya soon finds out, is she's not the only one in her family with second sight.

Tanya's adventure begins when she mother sends her to spend a few weeks with her Grandmother. Fearing it's going to be a rather boring experience to stay with a Grandmother she's not close to, in her dreary manor in the middle of the woods, Tanya is in for a big surprise. 13 Treasures has a lot of adventure, faery lore, and mystery that kept me turing the pages. At times I felt some of the story lines ended a little abruptly, especially with Red's story. I'm hoping there will be more to Red's story in the feature. Other times I felt it was a little dragged out, but in the end, the story wrapped up nicely answering some the questions I had, had through the book.

I loved the English setting and enjoyed the characters. Fabian, who lives at her Grandmother's manor, as his father Warwick is the grounds keeper, and Tanya find themselves in quite a few adventures as the faeries, goblins and gnomes cause more than a little trouble for Tanya. There's a something sinister in the woods and no matter how many times they're warned to stay away, something keeps Tanya and Fabian going back to the woods. Tanya's Grandmother, Florence and Fabian's Father Warwick are cold, stern and have many secrets between them, and while I felt the kid's distaste for them through out the story, at the end of 13 Treasures, I came to like these two characters a lot more, as I understood their actions more.

If you enjoy true faery lore, fantasy, and mystery, than I would recommend picking up 13 Treasures! It's not a light and airy read, but one that captures the readers attention and takes them on an adventure they won't soon forget. I think this is a fitting read for both middle grader readers & young adults readers. If there's a sequel, I am really looking forward to reading it.

About the Author

Skip Pizzi is Senior Director of New Media Technologies at NAB, where he focuses on new methods for creation and delivery of broadcast content. He is also Vice-Chair of ATSC Technology Group 3 (TG3), which is developing standards for the next generation of digital television. Previously he worked in multimedia for 11 years at Microsoft, served as an editor and contributor to several broadcast technology books and journals, and consulted to the professional, educational and government sectors of the media industry worldwide. He began his career as an engineer, manager and technical trainer at NPR. He is a recipient of the Audio Engineering Society’s Board of Governors Award, and a graduate of Georgetown University, where he studied Electrical Engineering, Fine Arts, and International Economics.

Graham Jones retired in 2010 from NAB, where he was a Senior Director working on advanced television issues. He is still active in ATSC, SCTE, and SMPTE standards committees. Previously he was Engineering Director for the Harris/PBS DTV Express, which introduced DTV to many U.S. broadcasters. He started his career with the BBC in London, and has worked as a consultant to broadcasters in many parts of the world. He holds a degree in physics, is a chartered electrical engineer, a fellow of SMPTE, and a life member of the SBE and the Royal Television Society. He has been honored with the Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award from the ATSC and received a citation from SMPTE for outstanding service to the society.

A superb explanation of essential concepts for a reader in good faith

Written as simply as can be, but not simplified beyond the limits of accuracy. Like any good tutorial, though, this text assumes good faith from a reader, that he or she will not simply dismiss its subject as unnecessary to understand.

Fantastic Guide for the Reading Teacher

Once again Jerry Johns puts out something practical and "user-friendly" for the reading specialist and the grade level teacher. We use his book with Informal Reading Inventories school-wide. The assessments offer great insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the reader.

About the Author

Karl Rosenkranz (1805 –1879) was a German philosopher. He followed Kant and Herbart as professor of philosophy in K�nigsberg; in 1848-49 he took part in the reform government in Berlin.

Andrei Pop is Associate Professor in the John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

Mechtild Widrich is Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA.
