First of all, let me say that the author is amazing. I've seen her in person and she is so knowledgeable. This is a book that I purchased as an undergrad and have since misplaced or borrowed to someone. Since this book is no longer in print, I was happy to find a used copy.

A good classroom text

Alter Ego is the text series currently used by the Alliance Francaise in Philadelphia for its intermediate level French classes. This book is designed to prepare the student for a specific DELF level, in this case level A2. In my opinion it's best for classroom use, not self-study. The new Alter Ego + is definitely an improvement on the old Alter Ego, with exercises after each lesson and more engaging content. Furthermore the appendix contains a good grammar guide, a lexicon of words and phrases from each lesson, some conjugations, a good section on correct pronunciation, and transcriptions of the audio from the text, the exercise book, and the pronunciation section. The audio is of course all on the accompanying CD. One possible improvement would be an expansion of the conjugation section which is currently organized by the number of bases in the conjugation of each verb. More helpful would be a list of model conjugations with lists of verbs that follow each model. There's no answer key in this text.

Alter Ego is entirely in French, so it helps to have some English-language books about French to fall back on. I can recommend French Grammar in Context (Languages in Context) (French Edition) or French Grammar in Context (Languages in Context) (French Edition). These are also for intermediate to advanced students.

Very repetitive, full of conjecture presented as fact

While this book has some good thoughts and information, our men's bible study group agreed that it has some big shortcomings. First, the author presents a considerable amount of conjecture about the qualities and background of each disciple, in most cases based on very thin or non-existent information from scripture. Then he builds on that as if it was hard fact, even exclaiming periodically that some fabricated background is truly amazing.

Second, it reads as if the author had a quota of pages to fill. The amount of repetition goes far beyond anything needed to emphasize a point. I didn't get through a single chapter without falling asleep. The overall message is good (God uses ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results), but it could have been made more effectively in half the number of pages, without losing anything.

Recommend for pastors or theologians... not for those early in their Christian pursuits

Perhaps I'm just not ready for this book. I am greatly preferential to books that "directly give guidance" on how to better live a Christian life. This book does not do this; rather you could infer inspiration by the ordinary who did lead extraordinary lives as Christians... or at least deepen your knowledge of the apostles. The book was also a little slow and redundant. Things that could be stated in 1 paragraph were shared in a page... It was not an easy book to "get into".

I recommend this book for only for people who are extremely mature in their spiritual journey... such as pastors or theologians.

About the Author

Norm Bacal founded the Toronto office of Heenan Blaikie in 1989, and within the next 25 years grew it to an office of over 200 lawyers. In 1997 he became the national co-managing partner of the firm and helped it become one of Canada’s best-known law firms. As one of Canada’s leading tax attorneys in the entertainment business, he helped to finance countless Canadian films and television shows and many Hollywood studio pictures filmed in Canada. He also advised studios such as Warner Bros and MGM and was a member of the board of directors of Lions Gate Entertainment for almost 10 years. At the end of 2012, Bacal retired as managing partner.

Born in 1956 in Montreal, Bacal graduated from McGill University’s Faculty of Law in 1980. He lives in Toronto with his wife, Sharon, a portrait artist. They have four children.
