I read all four books in a week. I must say it was a page turner from the beginning. When we are young, we don't think about the consequences from the decisions we make. This book makes you think. Loved it.

I loved this series. Who wouldn't want to have true friends like the characters in this book, but wit what kind of friends are they really?? This book kept you on the edge of your seat and led you to believe that it was true friends/family until the end. It was crazy how this book went but it was so true the way people can be so jealous of another whether it your friend or not. WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE WHO NEEDS ENEMIES!!! This book takes you for a ride and it has a lot of ups and down that many friends go through but then the twists and turns come in as well. People only hope to have real true friends, but when the knife stabs you in the back so many times its hard to take it out and forgive. This book reminds me why it is so hard to trust. Some things you just DO NOT DO whether you are doing it for a friend or not. In the end you are the one who gets hurt.

Focusing on clothing, bodily deportment, sex roles, sexual practices, and political rhetoric as forms of "fashion," Lipovetsky bounds across two thousand years of history, showing how the evolution of fashion from an upper-class privilege into a vehicle of popular expression closely follows the rise of democratic values. Whereas Tocqueville feared that mass culture would create passive citizens incapable of political reasoning, Lipovetsky argues that today's mass-produced fashion offers many choices, which in turn enable consumers to become complex individuals within a consolidated, democratically educated society.

Superficiality fosters tolerance among different groups within a society, claims Lipovetsky. To analyze fashion's role in smoothing over social conflict, he abandons class analysis in favor of an inquiry into the symbolism of everyday life and the creation of ephemeral desire. Lipovetsky examines the malaise experienced by people who, because they can fulfill so many desires, lose their sense of identity. His conclusions raise disturbing questions about personal joy and anguish in modern democracy.

Lipovetsky: A new hegelian thought

In this book Lipovetsky makes explicit ideas that one could find in a more timid way in earlier books. The basic idea of his thought is that fragmentation of society does not, in the way it is thought commonly, mean destruction of morals or democracy. On the contrary, democracy is formed by the powers that are able to join fragmentation and continuity. This is what he shows with fashion. Fashion is from where he can understand what is "the essence" (although it isn't an essenciallist thought)of Western Culture. He uses the concept of fashion to synthetize the opposites: fragmentaed indivilualistic society and universal democratic society. As Hegel, he sees the union of both opposites through the whole reconstruction of Fashion. Not science or Reason but fashion is what explains us better what we are and why we are like that.

Excellent & non-condescending look at the rise of fashion

Unlike the stuffy American academics who turn their nose up
at the world of fashion, Lipovetsky realizes the importance of
fashion - not just as a result of liberalism and/or capitalism -
but as a contributor to these structures.

Lipovetsky basically argues that modern fashion contributes
to democratization by allowing individuals more choices and also by
obscuring social classes (Does Bill Gates dress signify his social
or financial superiority in any way?).
He also gives a pretty concise and coherent history of fashion
which helps us understand where we stand today.
On top of all that, it's well written. I don't know whether to thank him
or Porter for that.
All and all, an outstanding and entertaining rejection of the tedious, reductive
Marxist explanations of fashion.

Well worth reading and thinking about, whether or not one ends up agreeing

I thought that this was an extremely interesting book, and well worth reading since it goes against so much common wisdom. I found it thoughtful, provocative, and convincing. This is part of a great change in perspective for this former Marxist. It was originally published in France in 1987 as L'Empire de l'�ph�m�re : la mode et son destin dans les soci�t�s modernes.

Despite the English subtitle, Lipovetsky is not just discussing clothing, although that is his starting point. He also uses fashion in a very broad sense, meaning not so much to follow a particular mode, but the ability to select and create variants for oneself. He argues that fashion in clothing is a unique development in 14th century Europe. In other places and times, styles of dress remained basically the same for centuries, reflecting a reverence for the past, which was often viewed as a better time. Styles might change as one culture conquered another and either forced its own dress on the captive peoples, or as those peoples imitated those in power.

In 14th century Europe, for reasons that are not entirely clear, the aristocrats began to experiment with novelty, aesthetic experimentation, hedonism, and individualism in clothing. This developed over time, extending to lower classes, and expanding outward into other facets of life. Lipovetsky argues that this is, on the whole, good, and a necessary part of modernism and multiculturalism. Such societies are more flexible and more tolerant, and cherish human rights because they respect individualism. Lipovetsky is not blind to the possibilities of social anomie, but he does not feel that it is occurring to a degree that offsets the advantages of fashion as he defines it. Societies which look to the past for the model of perfection often force conformity upon others. He argues that Toqueville's (and other's) fears that democracy would lead to uniformity are unlikely to be realized, because, as Tarde argues, everyone doesn't imitate one or a few people, rather individuals draw ideas from many sources and create their own unique lifestyles. Interestingly, Lipovetsky uses words like narcissistic, hedonistic, and frivolous freely, because he feels that these terms, although usually viewed negatively, in the end have positive consequences.

Among other things, Lipovetsky casts doubt upon the ability of advertising to create needs and wants, rather than ferret them out. He doesn't say so, but I have read that most product launches fail, which does argue against the power of advertising.

The English edition, published in 1994, includes an epilogue updating his thoughts. He does not consider the effects of the Internet, which were just beginning at that time. My one criticism of the book is that it is occasionally repetitious, which sometimes blurs his points, and makes the book a little longer than it needs to be, but I consider that to be a small issue weighed against the very interesting and thought-provoking insights. I found it all the more important in view of the recent attacks on Charlie Hebdo, and other terrorist attacks, domestic and international.

About the Author
Scott B. Keller is a professor of logistics and marketing at the University of West Florida. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas and has been on faculty at Penn State and Michigan State. His research interests include issues in personnel development and performance, and the development of market-oriented cultures within logistics operations. He has conducted research for numerous corporations, and his work has appeared in leading logistics journals. He is the co-editor of the International Journal of Logistics Management, an associate editor of the Journal of Business Logistics and a member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. His managerial experience is in warehousing, motor carrier operations, and ocean freight terminal operations.

Brian Keller became an independent consultant in 2006. In this capacity, he has supported commercial industry companies as well as Government entities including the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Innovation & Technology Transition, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the Defense Science Board. Previously, Keller was chairman and president of GMA Cover Corporation, a multinational company that designed, manufactured, and supported signature management products including the Ultra Lightweight Camouflage Net System (ULCANS). During Keller’s tenure, GMA won the Department of the Army competitive procurement for a $1.7B ULCANS production contract. He is an alumni of the Harvard Business School, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point, an MBA degree from the Florida Institute of Technology, and an MS degree in industrial engineering from the University of Alabama.

A Basic Overview - far from Definitive

Disappointing.
Upon receiving it, I was surprised at how thin this book was given it was advertised as a definitive guide.
It lacks detail and depth and barely scratches the surface of any of the topics covered.
Furthermore, the examples used are already dated and far from Interesting.
