Excellent course for teaching yourself Swahili

In the introduction to his book, Wilson claims that 3 months of heads-down study will lead to fluency in the language. While I disagree with that assessment of the amount of time it takes to learn Swahili, I agree with the general idea behind the statement. Swahili is indeed a language that one can teach himself in a relatively short period of time.

In order for that to goal to be achieved one must have a good book to learn from. I've looked at several books including the "Teach Yourself Swahili" book by Joan Russell, "Swahili: A Complete Course for Beginners" by Living Language and "Colloquial Swahili: The Complete Course for Beginners" by Lutz Marten and Donovan Mcgrath. Given my choice of just one book, I would take Wilson's Simplified Swahili. His explanation is thorough and the order in which topics are introduced is excellent with a few minor exceptions.

The book contains exercises at the end of the lessons and there are answers at the back of the book to check your work. I also appreciate the fact that Wilson's vocabulary lists contain (for the most part) essential vocabulary words. That is to say that there are not many words in the lists which are not particularly useful. So, the student can study the words provided in the knowledge that he will use those words extensively in ordinary conversation.

This book has been around for 30 years or more and it seems that it is still going strong. That says a lot about its quality. I recommend the book without hesitation.

Best Swahili text for beginners!

Wonderfully organized and easy to use. I've accrued many Swahili language learning books and this is by far the most effective and worth while. The claim that it's somehow 'outdated' is off point, "If it ain't broke, then don't fix it." And there is certainly nothing wrong with this language text.

Just What a Swahili Textbook Should Be

I love this book. It is simple (good title choice), free of silly language gimmicks, well structured and concise. It introduces a basic vocabulary of over 1,000 words and deals with challenging subjects, such as the Swahili case system and adjective agreement, in a clear and illuminated style. Its 66 chapters are short (perfect for short study sessions) but packed with all the basic facts you need to "get" a subject. I don't think there was a single dialogue in the entire book, so don't rely on this textbook to practice "everyday conversation". The best way to do that is to practice with native speakers. However, Living Swahili, Pimsleur and Colloquial Swahili are good choices if you want some quality samples of Swahili by native speakers. The book uses British English so American readers might be surprised at the spelling and word choice but this will not affect your understanding and enjoyment of the book. I own five Swahili textbooks (such as Living Swahili and Colloquial Swahili), and three software programs (Rosetta Stone, Byki and the Foreign Language Institute course) and this is by far my favorite resource. However, I must make a few caveats. I enjoy learning languages by understanding the grammar structure of a language early on in the process. If you have don't know the meaning of "object", suffix, infix or an agglutinative language, get ready to doing a little research because although this book is simplified it is not simplistic.

Race Horse Owners' Alert

Your trainer will injure every horse in the shedrow, most within 90 days, guaranteed. According to Tom Ivers our race horses lack the physical conditioning necessary to perform what they are being asked to perform. And hence, Fit Race Horse I (1983) to Fit Race Horse II, and all the superb tapes, newsletters, books and lectures in between. The best Ivers' book was the original with its witty insight into the sport. The Race Horse Owners' Manual was the most complete. Tom Ivers is a pioneer in bringing science to the racetrack in nutrition, shoeing, veterinary, and exercise physiology. Ivers summarized, compiled, exploded the old wives' tales and generally exposed the questionable world of the professional horse trainer. Ivers valuable contribution to the sport one day will be recognized. Much of Mr. Ivers work is out of print, so Fit II, probably the weakest of his work, is what we have, but it still contains much of the prior work and conclusions. Ivers overlooked that in athletics everybody trains differently and I am unable to endorse the exercise prescriptions, even having followed them religiously with a couple of horses. But despite that one flaw, besides Ross Staadens invaluable "Winning Trainers", Ivers work is easily the best I've read on training race horses.

Finally. Someone in the race horse business who makes sense.

If you're new to the race horse business, read this book and learn it. If you've been in it for a while hold on to your hat, he's going to walk all over your feelings. The content is orderly, clear, and written in a manner that keeps topics such as spiculated red blood cells from putting you to sleep. Which is a good thing because he goes into a lot of detail. The main topic is interval training for all breeds. He asumes that you're already a horseman or have one on your team, so he concentrates on the specifics of this very intense form of training. He makes complete sense and insists that you can make any conventionally trained horse better(lots)with his methods. This book is a must for any racing owner or trainer, and is worth every cent of what I first thought to be a rather expensive book.

My best ever buy!

This is without doubt the best equine book which I have ever purchased. When ordering this book I considered it expensive, but the expensive product is very often the cheapest.
Tom Ivers predominantly focuses on all aspects of interval training and writes of how to get incredible increases in performance through his techniques and also how to build and maintain a fit tough racing machine. You discover what a professional race horse trainer should know and should be.
When you get to the last page in this book, go back to page 1 and start over again and again. The wealth of information is unsurpassed and is protrayed in a thoroughly professional way.
This book is an absolute must for every racehorse owner and trainer alike.

I was trying to find a daily food diary to be as close to the one I use to buy from Weight Watcher . WW changed there books this year and I hated it so I searched Amazon and found this to be the closest to what I was looking for . I hope the people that make this book will read this review and read what is missing from this book . First at the very first page there should be a Weight - Loss Chart ( where you can put your starting your a couple goal weights . ) 1 column to number the weeks 2nd column your weight , 3column your loss or gain , 4th column Total lost or/ gain Last but not least there should be a page at the end of each week for notes . My personal likes is also on each day a place at the top for the date ,day and week number . When I get through this book I will look again to see if I find something more to my needs or I will have to modify it as I have this one ... I pasted in the weight chart, dates etc as I explained above ...Bottom line it was the best to what I was looking for .

Concise yet multi-faceted

Elizabeth Kandel-Englander has produced a much improved second edition of her book "Understanding Violence". I took the course from Dr. Englander and used the first edition. Now as a Teaching Assistant for her were are using the second edition and I am amazed at it's span and how much it is packed with useful and reputable research. The second edition involves such new topics as school violence, keeping in mind how much the world has changed post-September 11th. "Understanding Violence" attempts to look at violence from every angle without bias and without trying to pin down a specific cause for violence. This is an excellent resource for Professors teaching Forensic Psychology and Criminal Behavior courses, as well as an interesting read for someone who would like to become more educated in what makes criminals tick. Englander comes across as intelligent and knowledgeable without losing you in statistics and jargon.

Wonderful book but...

I had bought this book initially a couple of years back for a class and recently re-purchased it for my Kindle. It is a wonderful idea to have text books for rent on Kindle, so keep that up, but maybe next time make the book in order. Randomly a paragraph will just cut off and then I'll find the rest of the chapter somewhere else in the book. It is terribly confusing and very hard to cite simply because I cannot be sure what goes where in concept.

About the Author

Aaron T. Woland, CCIE No. 20113, is a principal engineer within Cisco’s technical marketing organization and works with Cisco’s largest customers all over the world. His primary job responsibilities include secure access and identity deployments with ISE,

solution enhancements, standards development, and futures. Aaron joined Cisco in 2005 and is currently a member of numerous security advisory boards and standards body working groups. Prior to joining Cisco, Aaron spent 12 years as a consultant and technical trainer. His areas of expertise include network and host security architecture and implementation, regulatory compliance, virtualization, as well as route-switch and wireless. Technology is certainly his passion, and Aaron currently has two patents in pending status with the United States Patent and Trade Office. Aaron is the author of the Cisco ISE for BYOD and Secure Unified Access book (Cisco Press) and many published whitepapers and design guides. Aaron is one of the first six members of the Hall of Fame for Distinguished Speakers at Cisco Live and is a security columnist for Network World, where he blogs on all things related to identity. Kevin Redmon is the youngest of 12 siblings and was born in Marion, Ohio. Since joining Cisco in October 2000, Kevin has worked closely with several Cisco design organizations; as a firewall/VPN customer support engineer with the Cisco Technical Assistant Center; as a systems test engineer in BYOD Smart Solutions Group; and now as a systems test engineer in the IoT Vertical Solutions Group in RTP, NC with a focus on the connected transportation systems. Besides co-authoring this book with Aaron Woland, Kevin is also the author of the Cisco Press Video Series titled Cisco Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Networking LiveLessons. He has a bachelor of science in computer engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a master of science in information security from East Carolina University, as well as several Cisco certifications. Kevin enjoys presenting on network security-related topics and Cisco’s latest solutions. He has presented several times at Cisco Live, focusing on network security-related topics and has achieved the honor of Distinguished Speaker. Best Cisco Certification Book I've read!

I am already CCNA (2 books), CCNP R&S (4 books), CCDA (1 book), CCDP (1 book) and CCNA Security (1 book) certified. The reason why I'm bringing this number is because CCNP Sec SISAS 300-208 was the best Cisco Cert book I've read!

#1 - it is fun... the book is very engaging and the flow of the reading is reeeeeeally smooth!
#2 - fun is not enough! The CONTENT of the book is really easy to understand, yet crucial for passing the Cert.

I've passed my exam today and basically all I used was the book with a Lab (ISE 1.2 + 3560-E switch + PC) to practice.

This is a good book if you need encouragement.

Noah Kagan offers a very intriguing look at what it is like to be an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are people who are not satisfied with the status quo. We have a strong desire to find better ways to do things. Rather than accept things as they are, we are able to imagine better solutions for people. I can imagine the dissatisfaction working for a large enterprise like Intel. In a large organization, it is very hard to feel as though one is anything more than a cog in the machine. Most people are not happy with their work at a large organization. Instead, they want to feel that they are doing something that has meaning. For an entrepreneur, if people are buying our service or product, it's a sign that we have successfully solved a problem for other people. There are always new solutions that we must work on. That is part of the exciting thing about being an entrepreneur. Even though Kagan got fired from Facebook, he doesn't trash Facebook or the managers at Facebook. He accepts responsibility and realizes that he needs to continue to work on the next path. A true entrepreneur certainly looks forward rather than backwards. This is a good book if you need encouragement.

A very interesting read. Well worth the time. Tyvm to the Author for creating it.
I wonder if the author realizes that he was never, in any way, going to really, actually get the stock payout. I think he never was going to get that money from the start, I think there was no intention. While there may have been an initial desire, I think that was yanked off the table as an option by some covert force/person who took a long look at who was getting what payouts and when it was found he was going to get a huge amount, plans were set in place to get rid of him sooner or later. This is the Wild, Wild West out here in California. I think he was trusting, transparent to those nearby, had passive-aggressive hostile coworkers, and despite the agreement he was taken advantage of.

I look forward to reading any more books this author writes as well as seeing his successes.

This book was very insightful for me. Maybe because I like Noah and his writing style. A lot of people seem to judge this book as if they were expecting to read a PhD 800 pages research... The book is clearly about Noah and how he was acting and thinking a decade ago. To me, reading the thoughts and mistakes from a successful young entrepreneur its very valuable. It's a free book, but even if it wasn't I wouldn't consider a "waste of time". Normally I would have rated it four stars because to be honest, it isn't a 5star book, but seeing all those people rating it a one star it's just not fare. The author put time and efforts to present us the best way he can with all that he had in his mind. If you think that's easy, try to do better! Go Noah! Continue to inspire us and provide value to thousands of entrepreneurs.
