Inspiring collection of personal triumphs

I love stories of people who've gone from nothing to something and this collection puts a smile on my face every time I read one. The stories really motivate you to stay positive and work hard to get what you want out of life. The names are familiar, but their stories weren't, at least not to me. I knew about Arnold Schwarzenegger's background, but the stories about others, like Jerry Seinfield and Ellen DeGeneres, were new to me. Seeing Seinfield now, I just can't imagine him choking on stage like he did with his first stand up attempt. I would have probably quit but he never gave up. That's the theme of all the stories really. Never give up.

It's so easy to see people on TV or in movies and think oh well they've got it easy, they're rich and successful. But when I read their stories I realize they started out the same as I did, sometimes a lot worse off even. It's such an inspiring collection of personal triumphs, really enjoyed reading it!

This book is full of inspiration gems!

Knowing the stories of great people from all walks of life is an effective way for one to learn different lessons in life. This is my main conclusion after reading this book. I cannot pinpoint what are the most important lessons I learned since it seemed that each story is unique from each other.

This book, as the subtitle states, is a collection of stories of different people. When this was offered to me by Jason, the author, I asked myself what are the possible lessons I can get from the people featured here. I had a bias towards famous business persons, statesmen; those people who are usually featured in biography books or who have their memoir. So when I read that there are people from entertainment industry, I was intrigued. I asked what could I get from them aside from seeing them show their skills in movies.

It turns that I learned a lot and was inspired by their stories. Now I will not look at the likes of Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ellen DeGeneres the same way I look at them in entertainment roles. Now I see them as people who have faced their problems with tenacity and relentless pursuit to attain their goals despite the many setbacks they encounter. All of these because of this book.

Moreover, this book, short as it may seemed based on the number of its pages, is full of inspiration. It is like a healthy salad full of nutrients in every bite you take.

I recommend that you read this book. It is short enough to finish but long enough to keep you inspired.

Stories Old and New has long been popular in China and has been published there in numerous editions. Although some of the stories have appeared in English translations in journals and anthologies, they have not previously been presented sequentially in thematic pairs as arranged by Feng Menglong. This unabridged translation, illustrated with a selection of woodcuts from the original Ming dynasty edition and including Feng’s interlinear notes and marginal comments, as well as all of the verse woven throughout the text, allows the modern reader to experience the text as did its first audience nearly four centuries ago.

The stories are populated by scholars and courtesans, spirits and ghosts, Buddhist monks and nuns, pirates and emperors, and officials both virtuous and corrupt. Characters find themselves involved in political intrigue, tests of friendship, inheritance disputes, extramarital affairs, and visits to the underworld. Social mores are examined through playful manipulations of plot and subplot. Virtue is eventually rewarded (though perhaps not in this life), and the world -- seen and unseen -- is depicted as a complicated but ultimately logical and understandable place. The streets and abodes of late-Ming China, and the characters who populate them, come alive in Shuhui Yang and Yunqin Yang's smooth and colorful translation of these entertaining tales.

Shuhui Yang is associate professor of Chinese at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. He is the author of Appropriation and Representation: Feng Menglong and the Chinese Vernacular Story. A reflection of Chinese society in Ming China...

This collection of 40 stories, as translated into English, is based on a famous two-volume Chinese publication. KU CHIN CHI KUAN - the Chinese title, meaning Startling Stories Old and New. The entire collection was compiled and edited by Master Feng Meng Long during the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644). The stories reflected on the Chinese society at the grassroots' level in which the people would often hear them being told and retold at the teahouses and wayside gatherings in the summer evenings by their favourite storytellers. And Feng Meng Long gathered and edited them and then had them published which were being preserved to this day. The English translation had been attempted in the past years first by the Foreign Language Press at Beijing under The Courtesan's Jewel Box with about 20 selection out of the original 40 stories. Another attempt was rendered by Cyril Birch under the title of Stories From A Ming Collection - The Art of the Chines Storyteller. However, he only attempted to select a mere selection of only 8 stories. The present collection is the combined efforts of both Yunqin Yang (freelance interpeter at the United Nations) and Prof. Shuhui Yang of Washington University in St. Louis to which they faithfully translated the entire 40 stories from Chinese to English.
Their translation is very readable, concise and expertly done. The stories in this amazing collection are populated with scholars and courteans, spirits and ghosts, Buddhist monks and nuns, Eastern pirates (or the Japanese Wokous) and emperors and officials who were both virtuous and corrupt. This superb English translation is unabridged and with also a selection of woodcut drawings from the original Ming Dynasty collection. Let's hope that this collection would soon be restocked and made available to customers of Amazon.com. My favorite part about this book was the vegetarian dishes. My girlfriend and I are not 'completely' vegetarian, but our diet consists mainly of vegetables, and the veggie dishes in this book are great. Especially the Zucchini & Pepper Lasagna. YUM. But for those other times when we want to experiment outside of our regular diet these recipes are great.

We are both very busy so it is difficult to think of different dinners to make, especially sometimes when it needs to be quick. This book is a great library of recipes that are excellent and flavorful. Health is a huge part of our lives, and we can tell that the creators of this book care about your health just as much as we care about our own. Great book and easy to scroll through and pick out breakfast, dinner, or lunch anytime!

Feel great and eat great food (fast!)

I rarely write reviews, but since I have found myself talking to everyone about how great this cookbook is, I thought maybe others would want to know as well. At first I was worried that there'd wouldn't be enough variety in the recipes - but there is! And then I thought they might require a bunch of odd, expensive ingredients - but the don't! There are enough recipes here for several weeks of meals, and everything I've made has been fast and fantastic! I don't arrive home from work until 6:30pm; these recipes are fast enough that we are typically eating by 7:30. I feel great and these are some of the best flavors I've ever had - and I'm in my mid-40s so that is saying a lot! I can't recommend this book enough - I hope they come out with a secod version with even more great recipes!

Although this is not the best Windows Server 2012 R2 book, it offers enough important information to readers, which is all I need. I can then do further research on the topics I am interested in. Since I am already familiar with Windows Server, I don't really don't need to get a thick book to show me how to do a step-by-step process. I recommend this book.

This was a great book.

This is one of the greatest novels in American Literature and it can show us what wealth can do to us if we let it treat us the was we want to be treated. I strongly recomend any young person mainly, or any other person who has a little free tim to sit down and read this good book. It isn't just a boring book, but one of the most ecitingly twisted tale of Americans that I have ever read.

I don't know if this is the best guide to TGG, but without it, you miss half the story. The thing I liked best is that the chapter summaries are short. Who wants to read 35 pages about the 20 page chapter you just read? You want to get back to the story and this guide quickly summarizes about 10 things in each chapter that you might have missed (and causes you to re-read a few pages) and then lets you get on with the next chapter.

This book was one of the better American Novels I have read

This is a great book about the American Dream and how it changes people. At some points it can be tedious, but after thoroughly reading it over I realized that every little detail is significant in this book. Both of you people who gave it one stars are idiots and deserve repeating the 11th grade.

The Ultimate UNARMED Combat

or APG 3?

The Short:

If you love unarmed combat, dream of racing chariots and fighting in gladiatorial games, wish to sail the seas, love Oriental Adventures, need more spell options, or want to break out of the base class mold; this is the book for you.

If you think your party's human shields ought to wield an actual weapon in the classic D&D environment, prepare for disappointment.

The Long:

To say there is a lot of "love" for the monk in this book is an understatement, it's a full blown obsession. More than 1/4 of the feats are related to unarmed combat (66 Unarmed Strike prereq feats, 10 Imp Grapple, 5 Imp Trip prereqs) and 21 new monk weapons make their debut (out of 40). However, if you are playing a weapon wielding fighter type (paladin, ranger, barbarian, etc.), there is not much love here and the class in most need of Ultimate Combat "love", the base fighter, gets a severe case of frostbite. Other classes not typically consider fighter types (alchemist, magus, wizard, cleric, rogue, druid, etc.) get equal or greater attention (new archetypes for every base class, numerous new feature specific feats, 29 pages of new Spells). It's seems the Ultimate Magic spillover landed here and all the truly martial classes paid for it.

My biggest complaint about the feats, besides too many are tailored towards monks, is expense. Only 12 feats need no prereq (4 require Teamwork). Most feats require 2 or more prereqs and its not uncommon for a "base" feat to have 5 prereqs (stats, class features, skills, race, race feature, and/or a BAB). Too many require specific class features like arcane spell casting, channeling, poison use, bardic performance, hex, wild shape, etc. encouraging multi-classing. Only 1 feat requires any levels in fighter while 21 feats use Monk levels as a possible prereq, usually giving access EARLIER than the BAB option would allow any fighter type to take it. There are simply too many reasons to stop advancing as or to never become a weapon wielding fighter.

Be warned, this is not a stand alone book. Some of the material requires ownership of non-base books, for example the Alchemist (Ultimate Magic) or Cavalier (Advanced Players Guide) Archetypes or the Elemental Fist (APG) or Improved Dirty Trick (APG) feats. If you don't intend to own either, then these pages and feats are a waste.

Mainly for Monks & Optional Rules

Given that combat is an essential part of Pathfinder, I was expecting a substantial supplement to the game that addressed the lingering weak points in the combat system, fighter-style classes, weapons and so on. While this book was a noble attempt at this, it did fall short.

As other reviewers have noted, it is very heavily focused on unarmed combat, which is great for people who are playing monks or who focus on that. However, the material for the other classes and other aspects of combat are somewhat less robust. Also, as other reviewers noted, it looks like some of the Ultimate Magic leftovers got reheated in this work-which should have used the space for the fighter-style classes.

The book does add some optional rules (and rules for guns), but none of these really add much to the Pathfinder game nor does it address the relative lameness of the fighter when compared to other classes. While my players did get this book, we have yet to actually use anything from it.

Hopefully Paizo will come out with an Ultimate Real Combat book that will do what this book should have done.

Excellent book

The only downside to any of the Pathfinder products I have bought is the actual quality of the construction. It seems I am being more careful with the books a lot sooner than with my old 3.5 books. As a matter of fact, none of my 3.5 books are as in the condition that my Pathfinder books are in, and they are a LOT older.

Other than that, this book, like almost all the "ultimate" books, is critical to gameplay. If you are on the fence about buying it, get it now...

Great Book! Very details instructions w/ good photos...

I am not an "auto mechanic" by any means, so I was pleasantly surprised when I recently ordered this book and used it to remove and replace the exhaust manifold gasket on my '94 Jetta. The book gave very detailed and easy to understand instructions to aid me in my task. The book has also helped me with other various tasks, including a complete front and back brake job and a complete tune-up. The book has already saved me hundreds of dollars & I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about working on their own water cooled Volkswagen.

Excellent book, but still needs more detail..

This is an excellent repair and maintenance book. However, when attempting to service my brakes, it fell short of giving a full explanation of what needed to be done. All I really wanted to do was to was replace my brake pads, but the caliper drawings were confusing and it referenced one-time-only use on the bolts holding the caliper, which is not true. A little lock tite on the bolt and you're good to go. The replacement bolts are just new bolts with lock tite already applied, and, as long as the bolt is in good shape, there is no need to replace. This should have been referenced. It also did not reference the requirement to use a special caliper piston tool on the rear calipers, since the rears need to be twisted because of the e-brake.
Overall, however, this is a great book and a must-have for any 1993-99 Jetta, Golf, or Cabrio owner.

This book is excellent! But......

I've got this book today,the content is very detailed and easy to read it! I'll begin to repair my mal-functioned A/C lights on Saturday.this book gave me great helps.
The only pity is this book only cover 2.0L 8v engine in code ABA(This is for North America only) (My engine code is 2E)
But I also bought a Haynes book"Volkswagen Golf & Vento (Feb '92 to '95)" from Amazon.co.uk. With cross-reference, I think this will do to me! which contains european models!
